The Mystery Beer

If you are thinking of starting a business here in Pittsburgh there are lots of great groups to check out.  Every other month or so, entrepreurs gather in the morning for Open Cofffee (usually hosted at the Alpha Lab offices on Carson St.).  Some of the Open Coffee folks are getting together for Start Up Drinks.  Kind of like Open Coffee, but now in the evening and with the option of beer.

Glenn, the Good Witch of Pittsburgh

Yes, we are still on the Yellowbrick Road to The Emerald Steel City.

The past few weeks have been a reminder to me that our journey back to Pittsburgh really is mirroring The Wizard of Oz. Just like Dorothy, I feel like I have been in a cyclone and dropped into a new and semi-strange land. I haven’t posted in so long because my free time has been spent getting reacquainted with my home state and the education system there. Since I left in 1993, so many things have changed it makes my head spin just to think about it.

First, there are two more criminal clearances than when I first earned my certificate to teach in PA. Don’t get me wrong, I certainly do not mind submitting to them and want school children to be safe from predators. I applied and paid for the first one online. Simple and convenient. I’m all clear and safe to teach. Yeah! I can check that one off the list. However, the second one required a list of all of my addresses and all of the people with whom I have lived since 1975. Yes, since 1975! In 1975, I was . . . well never mind how old I was but it was very, very young. Also, do the boyfriends of my college roommates count because a couple of them NEVER seemed to go home? Needless to say it took forFREAKINGever to make sure that document was accurate. I even had to use Google Earth to check on a few addresses. Then, this one had to be snail mailed and paid for with a money order – Do money orders still exist?? Apparently, so – who knew? I guess I’ve gotten too complacent with my newfangled, fancy-pants check writing and credit card using. Continue reading

Image via Wikipedia

Put down your iphones and pick up your compasses – join a scavenger hunt with the Western PA Orienteering Club this Sunday.

Where: Deer Lakes Park, Russellton, PA

When: Sunday, October 4, 2009; sign-in 11 AM – 2 PM

What is Orienteering? Orienteering is a competitive form of land navigation. It is for all ages and degrees of fitness and skill, and all-weather. It provides the suspense and excitement of a treasure hunt. The object of orienteering is to locate control points by using a map and compass to navigate through the woods.

What to bring? All you will need to bring is a compass (if you do not have one, we can loan you one), and appropriate footwear to walk in the woods.

Event Details: The courses offered at Deer Lakes Park will include Cross Country courses for beginner and advanced beginner, intermediate and experienced orienteers. Cross country courses involve finding a series of control flags in a pre-specified sequence. Come early if you plan to do more than one course.

  • Sign In 11:00 am to 2:00 pm
  • Must Finish the course by 3:30 pm

Instruction for novices: Available on site

Cost: $4.00 per map (family or group can share one map if they wish)
