Compass Fun – Orienteering in Deer Lakes Park

An orienteer at a control point
Image via Wikipedia

Put down your iphones and pick up your compasses – join a scavenger hunt with the Western PA Orienteering Club this Sunday.

Where: Deer Lakes Park, Russellton, PA

When: Sunday, October 4, 2009; sign-in 11 AM – 2 PM

What is Orienteering? Orienteering is a competitive form of land navigation. It is for all ages and degrees of fitness and skill, and all-weather. It provides the suspense and excitement of a treasure hunt. The object of orienteering is to locate control points by using a map and compass to navigate through the woods.

What to bring? All you will need to bring is a compass (if you do not have one, we can loan you one), and appropriate footwear to walk in the woods.

Event Details: The courses offered at Deer Lakes Park will include Cross Country courses for beginner and advanced beginner, intermediate and experienced orienteers. Cross country courses involve finding a series of control flags in a pre-specified sequence. Come early if you plan to do more than one course.

  • Sign In 11:00 am to 2:00 pm
  • Must Finish the course by 3:30 pm

Instruction for novices: Available on site

Cost: $4.00 per map (family or group can share one map if they wish)

Event Location: Deer Lakes Park, Russellton, PA. Anglers shelter off entrance #1 to the park. Look for red-and-white arrow signs. http://www.cosc.iup.edu/wpoc/f09deerlakes.htm

Cuts for Casa – Tue, September 15, 2009

CASA logo

Sorry for the last minute post on this event – but I wanted to highlight this for two reasons – 1. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) is an important organization that needs more volunteers and 2. The Barbers Inn, which I have passed many times – looks like a super cool place – a fancy barber shop complete with couches, tv’s and even a bar.  So check out this  FREE event – learn more about CASA and the Barber’s Inn!  More info here and on Facebook.

Hosted by the Court appointed Special Advocate program of Allegheny County, along with the Barber’s Inn — Shadyside, Cuts for CASA is a free networking event to spread community awareness about CASA’s volunteer program and the need for male involvement. CASA’s need for male participation is dire. Out of 175 volunteers who are trained advocates, only 9% are male. Since nearly half of the children CASA serves are young men, a male volunteer can serve as a vital role model for this vulnerable population.

Are you interested in attending? Cuts for CASA will be held on Tuesday, September 15, 2009, from 6-8pm at the Barber’s Inn, a male grooming lounge, located at 5744 Baum Blvd., Pittsburgh PA, 15206. Discounted hair cuts and shaves, free food and beverages, door prizes and giveaways will be provided to attendees. This event is FREE but you must R.S.V.P. Contact Daren Ellerbee at 412-594-3606 or click here to reserve your spot today!

Why Pittsburgh Party – September 17th

One of the ideas that came out of the GLUE (Great Lakes Urban Exchange) Conference back in March (see my post about the conference here) was the idea for the I will Stay If campaign – the folks behind GLUE are using this as an opportunity to talk about why people want to live in these Great Lakes Cities.

The first party was held in Detroit over the summer – check out the article about the party here (more photos here).

Some of the folks who have come together to help plan the Pittsburgh I will Stay If party have adapted the name slightly to Why Pittsburgh? – and are inviting anyone who is interested to come join the party on September 17th at the Shadow Lounge.

This is a great way to meet more people who are passionate about Pittsburgh and to connect to the GLUE network of other people who are passionate about their cities too.

If you are new to GLUE – check out Gluespace.org – follow their blog and sign up for the Gluesletter.  You can also follow GLUE on Twitter @gluester. They have some really great info about cities and projects in other cities – as well as some great photo contests.

RSVP for Why Pittsburgh on Facebook here.
