These are the crappy camera phone pictures I took at New American Music Union (AE promises video from the concert will be posted 8/12/08) on the Southside this weekend. I’ll be posting better pics along with a picture of the (un)official NAMU Jump Rope Champion 7th grader Isaac who made it to 178 revolutions – soon. (click on the pics to see full-size) Jump rope history: On Friday night the Roots inspired my boyfriend Ryder to start jump rope dancing with a piece of rope he found by the exit. Soon he was surrounded by a group of cheering concert-goers. Our friend Matt grabbed the other end and soon people were jumping in – all in time to the music. A group of dedicated jump ropers developed, including Bruce and his friends. This pretty much lasted all night and continued the next night during Bob Dylan who was a little less danceable. Apparently jumping rope is a great way to make friends!

Blogging about Good Night, States
Good Night, States is a Pittsburgh based band that has been generating quite some buzz around the burghosphere and beyond. You may recognize their leading lady from my favorite downtown dining establishment, Franktuary. They have a double header coming up at Club Cafe.

FREE Folk Music Festival – Sat. July 12 – Mellon Park
Calliope, Pittsburgh Folk Music Society, is hosting a day long celebration of folk music. The festival will take over Mellon Park in Shadyside from Noon to 10pm on Saturday, July 12. Lots of music acts, 2 stages and a children’s tent. All this is free. Calliope held their first music festival in 1977, it has long been called the Smokey City Music Festival. Since Pittsburgh has greened up its act this years music festival is named Rootz – The Green City Music Festival.
The festival will kick off with a performance by bagpiper and Calliope founder George Balderose and will continue throughout the day, with performances by a variety of regional artists in styles from bluegrass and American traditional to singer-songwriters and blues. Concerts will take place on the main stage in Mellon Park and on the newly constructed pavilion at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. The festival will also include a children’s tent and a silk-screening station, where festival-goers can print their own Calliope t-shirts using eco-friendly recycled t-shirts.

You should attend this event. You really should and I will give you a few reasons why…
- This concert was recommended to me by a person who really really knows music, he is an amazingly large collection and he would not waste his time with an event that was not amazing.
- Ligonier is just an hour away from Pittsburgh and is stunningly beautiful and nice, it is supposed to be hot this weekend and it is always cooler in Ligonier than it is in Pittsburgh.
- Calliope is a great organization for folk music in Pittsburgh. The do good things.
- The Ligonier theater is literally next to Joe’s Bar – this is a small, but amazing bar that has one of the largest collections of taxidermy in North America – worth a visit.
