Union Project Martin Luther King Junior Day Extravaganza

Celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King at the Union Projects annual Martin Luther King Junior Day event.  I have been told that this is one of the best events of the year.  Start the evening off with a free community dinner beginning at 6pm.  Stay for performances and reading of Dr. King’s works by local students.  All are welcome to attend.

Pittsburgh Idol

Okay, no quite American Idol, but this is an impressive event showing off some of Pittsburgh’s best young performers.

On Tuesday, January 15th, the Union Project hosts another Youth Talent Showcase

At last month’s Talent Showcase the judges and crowd were offered outstanding performances including local dance troupes, emerging hiphop artists, and solo vocalists. We are taking slot reservations for students. Just send an email to hilary@unionproject.org , titled “Contestant” with the name and talent of the youth participating. There will be some slots left open for walk-in contestants the night of the event.

Focus412 presents Carmon Rinehart

Carmon Rinehart

For those of you that may not know, Flickr is a photosharing blog that allows people to not only talk about their lives, but show the world what it looks like through the lens of their camera. Pittsburgh is fortunate enough to have one of the more active groups around, and in an attempt to bolster this, we have created Focus412. Basically, Focus412 is a monthly photography show that features the talents of some of Pittsburgh’s finest and most eclectic photographers. This Saturday, we will be showcasing the Carmon Rinehart. Bring your camera (we’re not snobs, any camera will do), come knock back a beer with us, and have some fun. Our shows are held at Remedy, which is located at 5121 Butler Street in Lawrenceville. The party starts at 8.

Little Italy Days

I think Bloomfield is my most favorite neighborhood in the entire city.  Bloomfield is like those neighborhood that you find in other cities, places filled with interesting buildings, walkable streets and amazing ethnic food.  Amazing food and neighbors that really care about the neighborhood.  Bloomfield becomes a big italian party for 3 days this weekend.  Stop by, eat good food and enjoy some of the best of Pittsburgh.

Plus the Bloomfield merchants have a pretty snazzy website with some great pictures and an RSS feed.

There will be tons of street food so I will save my Bloomfield favorites for another day.

Dragon Boat Festival

I am excited to write about this festival because The Dragon Boat Festival was one of the first events I posted when we started IheartPGH.com.

The festival is back for another fun filled day of chinese culture…

The Pittsburgh Dragon Boat Festival features traditional Asian music, dance, and food, plus arts and crafts for the children. Asian art, clothing, jewelry, fans, and much more is available along the Dragon Stroll. Learn how to use chop sticks, experience time-honored martial arts, demonstrations of Chinese yo-yo, tai chi, and much more.

Visitors are also welcome to try their hand at Dragon Boating. Each ornately-carved boat is 44 feet long and features brightly-painted dragon heads and tails that loom ominously at the fore and aft of each craft. A Dragon Boat seats 20 paddlers, a steersperson and a drummer to sound the beat. This is a truly unique experience and one that you may never again encounter.

Teams will compete all day and there will be food and activities to learn about Chinese and Pan-Asian cultures in Pittsburgh.

Can’t Make the Festival: Check out Three Rivers Rowing Asociation for Dragon Boat outings (and other opportunities to get on the water)
