Git Aht! – Things To Do This Weekend

(Things to do while doing the airlines job for them …)

Friday, March 30
Rock Against Rape , 6:00 p.m., William Pitt Union, Oakland
Local bands Rainstation Zero, Blindsider and Donora perform on the lawn as part of the activities surrounding Sexual Assault Awareness Week up on the Pitt campus. They’ll have prizes and giveaway t-shirts and refreshments will be available. Admission is free..

Film & Media Hub , 8:00 p.m., Peter’s Pub, Oakland
A bunch of Young Professionals (I’m never exactly sure what it takes to be a Young Professional, really. Define “young” for me, then define “professional”, and I think we’re getting there) are getting together at Peter’s to discuss, well, film and media. This could be fun, especially if you do a Quentin Tarantino impression, and just walk around saying “The Shaw brothers, right, are like the best producers ever, y’know? Americans don’t get the nuances of ‘Drunken Master’.”

They’ve also got art and ice sculpture going on, which hopefully includes the luge. 10 bucks covers food and beer.

Quick Hit for Friday:
Ladies Night at Level , women drink free from 9 to 10 and get half off martinis all night long. Those of us with exterior plumbing get reduced price on drinks also…

Saturday, March 31
I Heart Robots! , 9:00 p.m., Lawrenceville Heights
Sprockets
Un Event de sound avec media. Hell, that’s probably wrong, I dunno french at all, but it sorta classes it up a bit, yeah? Makes it sound more continental?

Who knows? This is a multimedia performance by Susie Silver, filled with sounds of Space Disco, Electro, Synth Pop, Sci-Fi, Kraut Rock et al.

Kraut rock? Beyond Rammstein, I haven’t the foggiest, honestly. Ah, Rammstein, how ich liebe ihr ability to push out all of those stereotypes of German music you fulfill mit deine “DU HAST“.

(Smokers! I think you can still smoke at brillo! Get your butts in while you can! So to speak!)

Hey Pittsburgh Launch Party , 9:00 p.m., Mcfadden’s, North Shore Side
heyPittLogoSo there’s a new web site launching here and I don’t know much about it other than it aims to be a resource for night life. Which is good, because we need that. I mean, I’m horrible at this jazz, clearly, and who has time to sift through all of the lists of events going on? Not me, baby, not me. But ok, it looks good, although I’m not sure who’s paying for it, who’s behind it. I’m heading to this gig tonight to try to find out, y’know, do something resembling actual “research” and stuff. Perhaps J-school will finally pay off?

Aww, who am I kidding? It’ll never pay off. It was a good way to meet girls at the time, bookish girls with a penchant for writing and a taste of the high life. These are very nearly the best girls to go after, I think, slightly behind well-educated trust fund women, who have that great stare that says to you “I can buy and sell you, but I’m going to entertain the thought of hanging out with you for a few weeks, maybe, and we’ll see how long it’ll be before I get bored and the lure of the other side of the tracks fades and I go back to the Hamptons and maybe back over some people leaving a club while on my way to score blow at a producer’s beachfront villa.” Or something.

Anyway, this thing is invitation only, so go to the web site to sign up. I’ve heard that Vanilla Ice is going to be there, and he’s always a good time. Don’t bring up Queen at all, though, if you know what’s good for you. Ferreals.

Sunday, April 1
Fair Trade Party , 2:00 p.m., Amani Coffee House, North Shore Side
Join in on a discussion of fair trade and ethical living at Amani this Sunday with the folks that run Equita, a store up in Lawrenceville that sells fair trade goods ranging from shoes to chocolate. Amani’s got a great selection of fair trade coffees, and “treats”, but that’s all the info I got from the flyer. I like the idea of “Fair Trade” goods, as far as that goes, although I don’t adhere to it that strictly. I do like that the alternative is there, though, I like the choice that’s available, even if I don’t always make said choice.

I heard about this via a flyer that this woman in my meditation/yoga class handed out. She’s a bit of a lefty, works with the unions and such, and that’s cool. As a matter of fact, we’ve got what looks like a Benetton ad going on in this class, if Benetton allowed old people like me into their ads, of course. There are lawyers, financiers, therapists, moms, dads, young, old, and heavy drinkers with deep emotional issues (that would be me.) It’s quite a good class, to be honest, and I’ve learned a lot that can apply to boozing. For instance, live with the moment, the awareness of the experience. To put it another way, when you’re shooting that fifth mescal, savor it as it burns it’s way down your gullet. Relish the pain, and be aware of the fact that had you not been such a cheap bastard, you would have paid the extra friggin’ buck to get the good stuff and wouldn’t be suffering as you are right now. Ooooooommmmmmm…..

Anyway, they’d like you to RSVP at polly.halfkenny@rankfile-ue.org.

Git Aht! – Things To Do This Weekend – Special “I Ain’t Arahnd This Weekend” Edition

(Things to do while wishing a slow painful death on the woman in front of you on the plane who reclines her seat all the way to your hips while you’re just trying to read, godammit, just trying to read …)

stroversI’m on assignment in the high desert somewhere East of Phoenix, Arizona where my agent and I are documenting, thorugh various mostly legal means, a project at a top-secret facility, where the rattlesnakes are the least of our problems. Them, you can at least hear coming, most of the time. The scorpions… They’re silent, but deadly. Much like a fart, except you get poisoned.

Regardless, the post this week will be abbreviated. Counting travel and shooting, yesterday was about 20 hours. I’m beat like the nieghbor’s kid, and we have to go out and do it all over again today. Here’s some stuff, though, just for shits and giggles…Friday, March 23
Bled Zeppelin , 9:00 p.m., RPMs, Bridgeville
Soucialism , 10:00 p.m., White Eagle, Sahsside

Saturday, March 24
Paintings and Silkscreen Prints by Phyllis Kindler, 6:00 p.m., Planet Art Gallery
Meet The Scientists – Bizarre Beasts from the Age of Mammals, 1:00 p.m., CMNH, Oakland

Git O’Aht! – Things To Do This Weekend

(Things to do while raising a pint in honor of Shane McGowan’s teeth …)

Friday, March 16
Exposure: Pittsburgh Featuring Rob Strovers, 8:30 p.m., Tonic, Dahntahn
stroversThe local flickr people move their shindig dahntahn this month to the friendly confines of Tonic. I went there after the opera last year (that’s right, I gots some o’ that culture) and it’s a great place to go after a show. And before a show. And depending on the show, during the show.

This would actually be one of the times you should go there for a show, as Rob Strovers, gifted and talented photographer displays selections from his vast collection of urban and industrial textures, with the odd black and white thrown in.

In a move that’s dangerously close to journalism, I sent Rob an email asking him actual questions, to find out what was going to be in the show and why he chose to got whatever route he was going…

“The urban and industrial texture thing has grown on me since first stumbling across the remnants of a partially demolished house on the south side slopes,” says Strovers. “There was this vibrant blue door, covered in moss and green slime set against a backdrop of brick, flaking paint and nature trying to reestablish itself. The more I look, the more I see and sometimes it’s an odd contrast, some vibrant splash of color and texture that stands out.”

So go, have a drink or two, check out the images. Then, have another couple drinks and look at them again, see if they’re different. If they are, you’ve had quite enough to drink and should probably take a cab.

Rockabilly Riot Friday!, 10:00 p.m., Howlers Coyote Cafe, Bloomfield
geetar
You got a cowboy hat and/or a pompadour? Use ’em tonight whilst taking in the melodious tones of The Rusty Gun Revival, The Bessemers and The Cocktail Shakers at Howlers. I predict a riot.

Me? I got the hat, the pompadour, eh, not so much. My dome is all “Night on Bald Mountain”-ish these days, a combination of Mother Nature’s cruel tricks and shaving it for a charity thing last year. A friend of mine just bought a Jeep Sahara, the convertible, and I look forward to taking a ride in it and feeling the wind in my scalp and the bugs going splat near where I think.

Quick Hit for Friday:
Green Drinks at the Warhol, mingle with environmentalists. Previously mentioned by Lindsay…

Saturday, March 17

snakes

(Brilliant mood music? You get that from Buck O Nine… Go visit their page.)

Look, I mean, you can sort of stand waving your arms about and hit a good time tonight…. Find some drunks, follow them. (At a discreet distance, of course.) Prepare for bloody knuckles as a very real possibility by the end of the night, but what the hell…

The Parade , 10:00 in the blessed a.m., Dahntahn
JoeNow, you don’t have to be there right at the start, but it’s a good idea, if only to stake out the prime drinking spots. There should be all the usual accoutrements of a good parade including marching bands, veterans, shriners, and fire trucks. All well and good, but you can also pretty much count on some hoons around, so best to avoid them as you don’t want to be dealing with bruises this early. Save that for later.

You should be able to stop into just about any bar and have a giggle and a Guinness, but if it’s still open, I’d suggest the Royal Oak on Wood street and First post-parade.

The Drinking At Night , All Evening, All Over
There are tons of good Irish bars to go a-drinking, and the Non-Irish ones are gonna be rowdy too. Of course, you can hit Claddagh’s or Molly Branigan’s if you’re feeling kinda corporate, Piper’s if you don’t ask for a “Car Bomb” (trust me on that one), Murphy’s Tap Room if you don’t mind riding out to Regent Square, Mullaney’s Harp And Fiddle if you don’t mind being at Absolute St. Patrick’s Day Ground Zero, or Finnegan’s Wake if you don’t mind paying for parking on the North Side.

The PG’s got a great St. Patrick’s Day section of events, so go there and check it for all the green details.

And now for something completely different, A Public Service Announcement:
We here at Git Aht love to drink almost as much as, say, Pitt Girl at a Ravenstahl stump speech, but we love to drink and pass out sleep where we actually do our drinking. (This explains the odd sort of coating on our outerwear that smells of stale beer and South Side. At least, we dearly hope that’s what explains it.) If you the bar owners frown upon you grabbing some rack time on their floor, then I’d say grab a cab. I’m not recommending any of these hacks in particular, I’m just sayin’… Take a cab if you need to.

– Eagle Cab: 412-765-1555
– Checker Cab: 412-381-5600
– Yellow Cab: 412-665-8100
– Peoples Cab: 412-681-3131
Sunday, March 18
Sleep it the hell off. Get up, eat something salty, get some carbs. Drink lots of water. Hate yourself and your drinking companions. Take a nap.

Git Aht! – Things To Do This Weekend

(Things to do while being honest with the kids …)

Friday, March 9
Spring Feeva Happy Hour , 5:00 p.m., South City Tavern, Sahsside
The local chapter of meetin.org (see, it’s not like they left off the “G” by accident, it’s a whole play on words (ok, not really, but you know what I mean), where you put the name of your major metropolitan area after it. Y’know, like “Meet In Pittsburgh” or “Meet In New York” or “Meet In Wilmerding”. It’s another networking/social/hey baby how YOU doin’ thing, and they’re getting together to celebrate the dawning of a new season, as the year moves from the still silent death of the land that is Winter into the beautiful, glorious spiritual rebirth that is Spring. OR, they get together every now and again to booze it up. It’s probably the latter, because they look like fun people. Go join the local group and show up to booze, or just show up to booze and then join the site. Whichever.

Aid for AIDS: Multi-Cultural Performing Arts Fest , 8:00 p.m., The Rex, Sahsside
phatmandeeLindsay busted out with the premiere on this one, so go there and read about it.

Suffice to say, it’s a pretty good candidate for our “Drinking For A Cause” for the evening, and it’s hosted by The Glorious Phat Man Dee. ‘Nuff said.

Quick Hits For Friday:
“Helloooo Blawnox!” Blindsider plays Moondog’s in Blawnox…
Go to Mullaney’s in the Strip around 9 and get an answer to the question “Alice! Who the F#*k is Alice?!?”

Saturday, March 10
Joe Grushecky , 7:30 p.m., Club Cafe, Sahsside
JoeI don’t remember a time when Joe wasn’t playing a show. And I’m on the dark side of my mid-thirties. That’s how long he’s been around. Friend of Bruce gets thrown at Joe a lot, and that’s not a bad thing. Springsteen knows talent when he sees it (for reference, see his first wife) and Joe is a gifted songwriter and performer. it’s an early show, so there’s also still going to be plenty of time for gallivanting and/or traipsing around the South Side. Go up to Bar 11 afterwards. They’ve installed some sort of bamboo posts on the bar that are absolutely perfect for bashing your head against after you’ve had a few. I speak from immediate experience. Luckily, Rob has a helmet behind the bar if you need to borrow it. I suggest you do, as does does does does my Grade II mild traumatic brain injury with bonus anterograde amnesia.

The Dirty Ball , 8:00 p.m., 121 Ninth St., Dahntahn
I’m wondering how Juddy has any time to do any writing. Is he man or machine, man or superman? We may never know until he shuffles off this mortal coil and scientists have an opportunity to examine the innards. I ask because in addition to working Soulcialism and Deep Funk/Northern Soul and Pandemic and various gigs at Shadow Lounge, he’s DJing this event, a fundraiser for Attack Theatre, home of theater. And attacking. And game night.

They’ll have three dance performances sprinkled throughout the night, along with “Dirty Little Secrets, Dirty Martinis and Dirty Dancing”. Me, I like all three of those. Well, ok, not the dirty martinis per se, because I’d rather be drinking something that wouldn’t get the shit kicked outta me up in Polish Hill, but ok, fine, if you’re going, just be at one with the event and have a dirty martini, join in the spirit.

No word of any “Dirty Talk”, so we’ll just have to play that one by ear. If you are, however, interested in dirty talk and are a single female between the ages of 27 and 40, please feel free to send me an email to gitaht@gmail.com with “Yinz’re Gonna Do What Ta Me? Eww!” in the subject line and we’ll see that you receive a response in as timely a fashion as our current staffing level allows.

Sunday, March 11
Sunday Night Supper With Lauren , 6:00 p.m., Brillobox, Hipster Grahnd Zero (Penn n’ Main)
Three cheese mac n’ cheese. That is all I need to say about Sunday dinner ever.

Git Aht! – Things To Do This Weekend

(Things to do while being put in company that’s way better than you are but still being appreciative of the shout out …)

Friday, March 2
Women’s Work , 5:30 p.m., 709 Penn Gallery, Dahntahn
artThis art opening has been a long time coming because, of course, it’s never done.

Thank you. I’ll be here all week. Try the veal.

Tonight’s the opening reception, and we all know what that means – free stuff, plus in this case, live music from Autumn Ayers. Over a dozen artists contribute to the show, including Leslie Ansley, Sarah Beitler, Margaret Burley, Susan Constanse, Christiane D, Vanessa German, Stacy Gross, Deborah Hoskings, Jill Hruska, Tavia LaFollette, Monique Kollman Luck, Mary Martin, Joana Ricou, and Sheila Cuellar-Shaffer.

Game Night and the Seven Minute Dance Series , 8:00 p.m., Attack Theatre, Bloom/Gar/Field
So it’s First Friday and Attack does this bit every First Friday. They mine the depths of your mom’s coffee table, the kind with the sliding hideaway cabinets,, right, and they find the gems like Four-Square, backgammon, Atari, and Connect Four. A quick note here – If a large, relatively good-looking (in the right light) bald man named Me is there and you shout out “Pretty Sneaky Sis” I’ll dope slap you. And that ain’t a threat, it’s a fact. Believe that.

Every so often, they’ll be busting out the dance, but only for seven minutes at a time. Am I the only one that thinks the phrase “The Seven Minute Dance” could maybe be a euphemism?

This gig was named one of the best places for Pittsburgh Singles to meet by the PG, so, y’know, work on those opening lines. As a public service, I’ll give you a couple for free:

– “Is that a Pitfall Cartridge in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?”
– “Do you play backgammon around here often?”
– “Why is this large, relatively good-looking (in the right light) bald man hitting me? It was just a joke when I said ‘pretty sneaky sis!’ Ow! Christ! Ow! Someone help me, for god’s sake!”

Saturday, March 3
Pittsburgh Party For A Purpose – Pittsburgh Cares , 8:30 p.m., Olive Or Twist, Dahntahn
Call it what you want but this is your “Drinking For A Cause” for the weekend. Pittsburgh Cares is a local organization that helps the community through the spirit and application of volunteerism. So they do good work, and what better way to show your support than to get tight in a tony dahntahn establishment? I mean, they normally turn me away* at the door of Olive Or Twist, so right there, you know it’s a quality joint.

Raffles, live entertainment, food, and 100% of the 10 cover goes to Pittsburgh Cares.

(*Note: That’s never actually happened.)

“Amptique” – Indie Dance Party , 10:00 p.m., Creative Treehouse, Bellvue
Amptique is hosting an Indie dance party at Creative TreeHouse that includes work by local artists Laura Petrilla and Matthew Macri. The Creative Treehouse is trying to establish an arts scene up in Bellevue, by opening a space for a shared studio, art & music venue, educational center, and creative service, and good for them. I like the art, and I want more of the art everywhere. Bellevue’s as good a place as any for more art.

The gig’s byob, and they’ll have mixers available. I dunno how deep the mixer selection will be though, so if you’re really into drinking, say, vodka mixed with gatorade and clam juice you’re probably on your own.

Quick Hits For Saturday:
Moxie’s opening a show, the “Box Series” by E. Gibbons…
Planet Art’s opening “Surrealistic Realism” by John Hinderliter…

Sunday, March 4
Liquid Sundays , 6:30 p.m., Rex Theatre, Sahsside
So the “Liquid Sundays” is (I know, that seems awkward using “is”, but I’m such a rank bad hat at the English Language that I’m just gonna go with it that way) a new monthly event taking place on the South Side. I can’t really tell if it’ll always be at the Rex or not, but that doesn’t really matter, I suppose. It’ll be in Sahsside regardless, and how many places could it be hosted?

They start off with a couple bands, “Soulharmonic” and “In The Wake Of Giants”, and they’ll also have an author on hand, Bob Hartman of London to “tell a story or two”. One would assume they’ll be his own, and not like, retelling of other people’s stuff. 21 and up, no cover. We love no cover, in more ways than one.

(Thanks to Nicole for sending this one in and to Dwight for telling her to do so.)
