♫ Music in Ahrn City TONIGHT: David Berkeley

David Berkeley will be having his CD Release Show TONIGHT at Club Cafe at 7pm for his new album Some Kind of Cure.  This CD is based on his experiences living in a very small village in Corsica with his wife and young son.

If you like to listen to Joseph Arthur, Damian Rice, David Gray, or Nick Drafe — you will throughly enjoy his album.  A few of my personal favorites on the album include:  “Homesick,” “George Square,” and “Marie.”  The music is so raw and pure, and each song paints a different story and experience.  His lyrics make me want to leave the Ahrn City and head to Corsica.

If you aren’t doing anything tonight, this is the perfect kind of music to sit with a cup of coffee and listen to (or beer if you prefer!)  If you can’t make it out tonight, take the time to listen to it here.

David earned ASCAP’s Johnny Mercer Songwriter Award, and his song “Fire Sign” was written specifically for and featured in the CBS series “Without a Trace.”  Berkeley has been featured on WFUV, World Cafe, Mountain Stage, XM/Sattelite, NPR, “This American Life” and was recently a finalist in the Mountain Stage New Song competition. He has toured/opened for Dido, Ben Folds, Rufus Wainwright, Ray Lamontagne, Billy Bragg, Don Mclean, Nellie Mckay, Guster, Gary Jules, and many more.

Snowing and Sled Riding in the ‘Burgh

Boy on snow sled
Image via Wikipedia

Before I get started,  there has been a pretty lengthy debate as to whether riding a sled in the snow is termed as sledding or sled riding.  Now, I never considered the term sled riding EVER to be incorrect since I’ve grown up in either central/western PA my entire life.  As soon as I went to college, though, things changed.  For example, here’s a conversation I had with my friend from New Jersey:

Me:              “Hey Brian!  Do you want to go sled riding with us on Flagstaff Hill?”
Brian:        “. . . What?  You mean sledding.”
Me:              “No.  I definitely meant sled riding.”
Brian:        “No.  Sled riding doesn’t make sense.  You meant sledding.”
Me:              “You ride on a sled… which is why it’s called sled riding.  We’re going sled riding.”

After a long-winded discussion and bringing in a few of our friends, it was decided that Western PA people didn’t know what they were talking about and sled riding was incorrect.

So what is it? Are you going sled riding or sledding?
