Pittsburgh Idol

Okay, no quite American Idol, but this is an impressive event showing off some of Pittsburgh’s best young performers.

On Tuesday, January 15th, the Union Project hosts another Youth Talent Showcase

At last month’s Talent Showcase the judges and crowd were offered outstanding performances including local dance troupes, emerging hiphop artists, and solo vocalists. We are taking slot reservations for students. Just send an email to hilary@unionproject.org , titled “Contestant” with the name and talent of the youth participating. There will be some slots left open for walk-in contestants the night of the event.

Film Fun: Children of the Corn

I have a thing for documentary films, I love them. Thus I am very interested in seeing this documentary, King Corn, at Pittsburgh Filmmakers this weekend. King Corn is the story of two friends who plant and grow an acre of corn in Iowa and try to follow their corn across the country to see where food comes from. I enjoyed (was terrified by) Fast Food Nation and I really really like corn, so I am looking forward to checking out this film. Continue reading

Monday Nights at Southside Works

…Are awesome! You can see a movie for 5 dollars and get a free 32 oz. popcorn. A lot of kids on the Southside go to the movies on monday nights because of this deal. That’s really all I have to say. I just thought I should share the knowledge in case people might be interested.

Damiera & Endless Mike & The Beagle Club

There’s this really awesome band named Damiera coming to town- I saw them at the Butler VFW a couple of months ago. They’re playing at the Roboto Project on Saturday, December 16th. They’re also playing with Endless Mike & The Beagle Club. Endless Mike is an awesome band that has unified the Pittsburgh and Johnstown music scenes and as one person said, “My grandma even likes them!” . I suggest going- I’ll be there and we can say hi or pretend we don’t know eachother- whichever one floats your boat! It’s only 6 dollars (seriously, that’s like, one drink at most bars) and it starts at 7 pm. To see all shows booked by independent promoters check this out: http://www.myspace.com/pittshows

Tales from the Frontlines: Doorknocking PGH!

So there I was… walking up a hill on the northside, with streetlist and literature in hand, and Susan Banahasky on my right. When there it was! Oh my there it was. We stopped. We stared in awe. Finally, I came to my senses, made an incoherent noise about having a camera, put everything on the ground, and pulled out my digital camera! (Thanks Mom and Dad) Now, I don’t know the people who own this house, and it wasn’t on our list, so I never had the chance to talk to them, but from what I can tell, they heart PGH and the Steelers, a LOT!
