Rock Against Rape , 6:00 p.m., William Pitt Union, Oakland
Local bands Rainstation Zero, Blindsider and Donora perform on the lawn as part of the activities surrounding Sexual Assault Awareness Week up on the Pitt campus. They’ll have prizes and giveaway t-shirts and refreshments will be available. Admission is free..
Film & Media Hub , 8:00 p.m., Peter’s Pub, Oakland
A bunch of Young Professionals (I’m never exactly sure what it takes to be a Young Professional, really. Define “young” for me, then define “professional”, and I think we’re getting there) are getting together at Peter’s to discuss, well, film and media. This could be fun, especially if you do a Quentin Tarantino impression, and just walk around saying “The Shaw brothers, right, are like the best producers ever, y’know? Americans don’t get the nuances of ‘Drunken Master’.”
They’ve also got art and ice sculpture going on, which hopefully includes the luge. 10 bucks covers food and beer.

Un Event de sound avec media. Hell, that’s probably wrong, I dunno french at all, but it sorta classes it up a bit, yeah? Makes it sound more continental?
Who knows? This is a multimedia performance by Susie Silver, filled with sounds of Space Disco, Electro, Synth Pop, Sci-Fi, Kraut Rock et al.
Kraut rock? Beyond Rammstein, I haven’t the foggiest, honestly. Ah, Rammstein, how ich liebe ihr ability to push out all of those stereotypes of German music you fulfill mit deine “DU HAST“.

Hey Pittsburgh Launch Party , 9:00 p.m., Mcfadden’s, North Shore Side
So there’s a new web site launching here and I don’t know much about it other than it aims to be a resource for night life. Which is good, because we need that. I mean, I’m horrible at this jazz, clearly, and who has time to sift through all of the lists of events going on? Not me, baby, not me. But ok, it looks good, although I’m not sure who’s paying for it, who’s behind it. I’m heading to this gig tonight to try to find out, y’know, do something resembling actual “research” and stuff. Perhaps J-school will finally pay off?
Aww, who am I kidding? It’ll never pay off. It was a good way to meet girls at the time, bookish girls with a penchant for writing and a taste of the high life. These are very nearly the best girls to go after, I think, slightly behind well-educated trust fund women, who have that great stare that says to you “I can buy and sell you, but I’m going to entertain the thought of hanging out with you for a few weeks, maybe, and we’ll see how long it’ll be before I get bored and the lure of the other side of the tracks fades and I go back to the Hamptons and maybe back over some people leaving a club while on my way to score blow at a producer’s beachfront villa.” Or something.
Anyway, this thing is invitation only, so go to the web site to sign up. I’ve heard that Vanilla Ice is going to be there, and he’s always a good time. Don’t bring up Queen at all, though, if you know what’s good for you. Ferreals.

Fair Trade Party , 2:00 p.m., Amani Coffee House, North Shore Side
Join in on a discussion of fair trade and ethical living at Amani this Sunday with the folks that run Equita, a store up in Lawrenceville that sells fair trade goods ranging from shoes to chocolate. Amani’s got a great selection of fair trade coffees, and “treats”, but that’s all the info I got from the flyer. I like the idea of “Fair Trade” goods, as far as that goes, although I don’t adhere to it that strictly. I do like that the alternative is there, though, I like the choice that’s available, even if I don’t always make said choice.
I heard about this via a flyer that this woman in my meditation/yoga class handed out. She’s a bit of a lefty, works with the unions and such, and that’s cool. As a matter of fact, we’ve got what looks like a Benetton ad going on in this class, if Benetton allowed old people like me into their ads, of course. There are lawyers, financiers, therapists, moms, dads, young, old, and heavy drinkers with deep emotional issues (that would be me.) It’s quite a good class, to be honest, and I’ve learned a lot that can apply to boozing. For instance, live with the moment, the awareness of the experience. To put it another way, when you’re shooting that fifth mescal, savor it as it burns it’s way down your gullet. Relish the pain, and be aware of the fact that had you not been such a cheap bastard, you would have paid the extra friggin’ buck to get the good stuff and wouldn’t be suffering as you are right now. Ooooooommmmmmm…..
