The Invincible Czars performing Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920)
October 10, 2017 @ 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM
The Hollywood Theater welcomes The Invincible Czars on tour from Austin, TX! The band has performed in theaters across the country to audiences eager to experience their intricately crafted and precisely performed silent film soundtracks. Fusing math-rock, classical music, lounge grooves, country shuffles and circusy polka, the band has built a name for themselves with their reinterpretations of classical works by Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky, as well as their original scores.
Considered by many to be the first great American horror film, DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (1920) allowed stage legend John Barrymore (current actress Drew Barrymore’s grandfather) to deliver his first virtuoso performance on film. Blending historic charm with grim naturalism, this version of DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE is one of the more faithful of the many screen adaptations of Robert Louis Stevenson’s story. John Barrymore’s performance is out-of-this-world – it’s astonishing to see the transformation begin as Jekyll becomes Hyde without the use of any makeup, instead relying purely on the power of Barrymore’s ability to contort his face.
In the story, and the film, a visionary scientist’s ill-fated attempts to unleash the human mysteries that dwell beneath the shell of a civilized self result in a drama that has resonated with audiences for over 100 years.
