Help me build a Pittsburgh Summer List

Summer family jump

I am having a hard time getting my brain around the fact that summer is here.  I have been out of town for much of may – and it seems like spring just merged into summer.

I have also been inspired by reading some other works and I am thinking about a little blogging challenge for the summer.  I would like to compile a big list of things to do here in Pittsburgh this summer and blog my way through the list.  These things need not be expensive.  I have a few ideas but I wanted to see what you would put on this list.  I hope that many of you will join some of the fun too – would love to collaborate with other bloggers, photographers and Pittsburgh lovers on this!

Here are some ideas that came in from Twitter on Friday:

  • Plan a Tweetup at PNC park with Twittsburgh
  • Attend the Mattress Factory’s Urban Garden Party
  • Visit Paige’s Dairy Mart
  • Kayak with Kayak Pittsburgh (I thinking of setting a goal of miles to kayak)
  • Take a sewing class at Cut & Sew Studio
  • Attend an outdoor yoga class
  • Run some neighborhood 5ks – which ones?
  • Dine at Curry Away – just learned about this place and have heard great things!
  • Drive the entire Red Belt (how long would that take?)

pahahah! I hit Paige's dairy the day it opened this year on March 20th. I was just happening by and wooHooo!

    June 11 · 1:00pm – 5:00pm, Carnegie Museum of Art Theatre
    4400 Forbes Avenue Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
    ~have friends over more often
    ~remodel our kitchen
~write about Pennsylvania Peaches (I sell them) and hold a Peach recipe contest
~ attend the Big Butler Fair
~ attend the Arts Festival and then have some dinner afterward

I look forward to comments on this post.. as I gear up for my move to Pittsburgh in late July. Its a long way from Melbourne Australia and so I am hungrily and happily lapping up any advice on what is on offer! We are headed to an apartment in Squirrel Hill… any tips from locals? or other areas to check out?..

wow – I think you might be our first comment from Australia! Glad to hear your are headed to Pittsburgh. Sq. Hill is great. Is there anything in particular you are looking for in Pittsburgh – arts things? outdoors things? sporty things? Pittsburgh loves sports 🙂

Well that makes me happy to hear! Our precious books and favourite vases, along with some bed linens and loved cookware were all collected by removalists yesterday and should join us in Sq Hill in the next few months. The bits that made my heart sing reading your post were the outdoor yoga class, the neighbourhood runs, kayaking on the river.. though my treasured husband I am sure is less keen on the yoga and more keen on gallery happenings (we are coming so he can study fine art at U. Pittsburgh) and the local music scene. These are exciting times.. so happy to be arriving in late Summer too.

        I will keep checking back!

LOVE the idea! Here's a couple more suggestions:

    – KENNYWOOD!
    – Checkout bike trails in the city and nearby
    – The many things at Ohiopyle (hiking, rafting, camping, etc)
    – Visiting other state parks in the area (there are a surprisingly large amount)
    – Attend a concert at the newly remodeled Homestead Library (http://post-gazette.com/pg/11152/1150464-51.stm)
    – Explore the charming small towns along our rivers
