Fangtastic Fiesta – Mad Mex Halloween Party!!!

One of the more frequent questions asked here at IheartPGH is what should I do for Halloween/New Years/Fourth of July? So I thought I would get a head start on an answer for that with this Halloween Party from Mad Mex which is one of the best best BEST places to eat in Pittsburgh. I am loyal to the Oakland Mad Mex but given this space locations I understand why the party is moving to the Cranberry and Robinson locations – each location will be in party mode with excellent music TheMockster (from WRCT) will be lurking at Cranberry and you will find DJ Swank Cat haunting Robinson), margaritas and more.

How are you planning on celebrating Halloween this year?

Post-Gazette Article on the Upcoming Why Pittsburgh Party

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Building

I wrote about the Why Pittsburgh Party on Friday and I wanted to post a follow up because I was worried that the info would get lost in the weekend emails.  The Post-Gazette beat me to it with a great article about the upcoming Why Pittsburgh Party on September 17, 2009 (click here for the party details).

Here are some highlights from the article:

Carrie Hagan, a graduate student in history and policy at Carnegie Mellon University, met Ms. Wilson through the League of Young Voters and joined the party committee “and the next thing I know I am throwing the party,” said Ms. Hagan. “I couldn’t stand the idea of not being part of something like this.”

The Detroit party was “a qualified success,” said Ms. Szurpicki. “We had around 100 people and collected over 80 good photos” of participants holding a white board with the phrase “I Will Stay If …” completed.

“The photos show that people want better regional cooperation, public transit, bike lanes, curbside recycling, things like that. And what has come out of this is people saying ‘I am staying to be a part of something,’ ‘I am staying because I want to help build that curbside recycling program.’

“I fell in love with this city the moment I crossed the bridge and have not looked back since,” she said. “I’ve been a lot of places and this is the kind of place I want to live.

"I Think You Should Apply for It!"

While living in NC for 14+ years, my husband and I would pack up the fam and make the 8 hour trek home at least twice a year and sometimes more often.  On the way north, we eagerly awaited the chance to be greeted by the Monongahela River which flows under a bridge somewhere near Morgantown, WV.  Without fail we would shout “Hello, Mon!”   – I know, super corny.  At that point in the trip we could get a signal from WDVE and it was as if we never left.

Our trips back to NC were always bitter sweet.  It became a tradition to discuss moving back while we drove through WV, VA and most of NC.  Eventually, it was almost as if we were reading from a script debating the pros and cons of the issue.  The discussion always ended in a draw – although we both missed our hometown, it probably wouldn’t work out.   Then we would go back to our day to day existence and look forward to the next trip ‘home’ and the next lament-filled trip back to Charlotte.

That is until our last trip in July.  Nursing a hangover from a party (what can I say, I’m a lightweight) with high school friends and former teachers while my husband drove and tried to keep the kids quiet, I heard the faint beeping of a text message.  Summoning all the strength I had left from trying not to puke in his car, I leaned over to check my phone.  It was a 412 number I didn’t recognize right away.  It said, “chk fb wn U gt hm.”  Thinking there was an embarrassing pic from the party posted, I used my newly acquired skills to check Facebook Mobile right then.  There was a message from one of my former teachers (Hi, Pete!) –

“ESL position at Chatham College in PG today.  You would be perfect for it.”

When I was sure the boys were sleeping, I mentioned it to my husband.  I figured that it would be the beginning of our usual sadness laced dialogue about how we should move back to the ‘Burgh but really couldn’t do it.  Instead, the new script had just one line:

“I think you should apply for it!”

And so started our  journey back to Pittsburgh.

Why Pittsburgh Party – September 17th

One of the ideas that came out of the GLUE (Great Lakes Urban Exchange) Conference back in March (see my post about the conference here) was the idea for the I will Stay If campaign – the folks behind GLUE are using this as an opportunity to talk about why people want to live in these Great Lakes Cities.

The first party was held in Detroit over the summer – check out the article about the party here (more photos here).

Some of the folks who have come together to help plan the Pittsburgh I will Stay If party have adapted the name slightly to Why Pittsburgh? – and are inviting anyone who is interested to come join the party on September 17th at the Shadow Lounge.

This is a great way to meet more people who are passionate about Pittsburgh and to connect to the GLUE network of other people who are passionate about their cities too.

If you are new to GLUE – check out Gluespace.org – follow their blog and sign up for the Gluesletter.  You can also follow GLUE on Twitter @gluester. They have some really great info about cities and projects in other cities – as well as some great photo contests.

RSVP for Why Pittsburgh on Facebook here.
