One of the other things I talked about on WDVE this am is the Zipcar low-car diet that just ended last week. Pittsburgh is one of the 50+ city that has Zipcars parked around town. Once you are a member, you can reserve a car online and drive it when you need it.
I know Pittsburgh is a driving town – but if you are a student and just need to use a car once in a while for a trip to the grocery store or Ikea – or maybe you have a car for your family but once in a while you need to use a pick up truck – Zipcar is the perfect solution. The hourly rate is about $10 and that includes gas AND insurance.
If you are thinking of joining use this link to sign up and get $25 in driving credit.

Don't mean to get picky, but I take exception to the statement, "I know Pittsburgh is a driving town."Pittsburgh has one of the best public transit systems in the nation and is a great place for both practical and recreational biking (check out bike-pgh.org). More so than many other cities, Pittsburghers can and even should get by without a car. That being said, I do think that the Zip car is an awesome program.

Hi Billy – thanks for your comment – I completely agree. I should have made that sentance more clear – you can live in Pittsburgh with out a car – and Zipcar makes that even easier. BikePGH is doing an awesome job promoting cycling as a mode of transportation. And Pittsburgh has some great tools that make taking the bus super easy – we are one of the cities that offers Google Transit (http://www.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&dirflg=r&ll=40.420948,-79.933777&spn=0.188257,0.252053) – put in where you are and where you want to go – Google transit tells you which bus stop to walk to and which bus to take (also works on the Google Maps app for blackberry).
