Be a Fan of Steeler Baby on Facebook, Pittsburgh Fire Department and What to Do If Your Pipe Bursts

steelerbabyImage by jonbro via FlickrWell I am a little behind in celebrating Steelers fever here because I returned home on Saturday night to an indoor waterfall. 2 little cracks in a copper pipe less than a half inch can cause a lot of water to come through the ceiling.

I want to post a few things about the frozen pipe situation because one of the first things I did after rescuing the computer from the rushing water was to google “pipe burst” and “pittsburgh emergency plumbers” and the results weren’t helpful.

So after an hour of calling 24 hour plumbers in the yellow pages to come shut off the water – yes we tried to shut it off but the handle was broken – I finally asked the answering service lady what to do. (I secretly think she is the same lady that answers the phone for every plumber in the phone book and she was getting a real kick out of my return calls). She said call the fire department. So after another plumber telling me he could come over after he went to church (it was now 2am) and I didn’t think I should let this water fall continue for another 10 hours. I called the Pittsburgh Fire Department – Thank You, Thank You, THANK YOU to the 4 firemen who arrived with in minutes to shut of the water and make sure the house wouldn’t burn down (the water was coming through the light fixtures). They were even kind enough to sing happy birthday to me before they left.

I also want to thank Joe at Preferred Restoration who kindly talked me through what you should do after you get the water shut off and how to minimize damage (and is possibly the only person in the yellow pages that actually offers 24 hours response). Joe had a crew at the house by 10 am and was able to get a plumber there by 11am. Within a few hours the water was gone and both the first floor and basement have super humidifiers and 10 super turbo fans running. Out with the water – in with the wind tunnel.

If you have a great plumber to recommend – please share in the comments below. If you are a plumber that likes to answer late night calls – you should let us know that too.

So I had to take a nap before the Steelers game! I am glad that Pittsburgh is going to the Super Bowl because there are alot of Steelers things I didn’t get to post about before the game. Starting with Steeler Baby. We have been a fan of Steeler Baby since 2006 (see the original post here). You should be a fan of Steeler Baby on Facebook too – they currently have 893 fans – I think we can easily help them get to 1000. You can even get a Steeler Baby countdown widget for you blog. Blogski is blog speak for the Polish Hill Civic Association

Photo shows view of Immaculate Heart of Mary C...Image via WikipediaThis week must be all about Polish Hill (see my post on the Polish Hill signs and read about my run in with the police here).  I would like to think I do a pretty good job of keeping track of Pittsburgh blogs but I just found this one today.

Blogski is the website and blog for this Polish Hill Civic Assocaition and it is one of the best Neighborhood blogs I have seen.  Blogski has information about events, businesses and articles of interest to Polish Hill.   This is a great resource for all things Polish Hill and all things polish in Pittsburgh (you can even read the Blogski in polish).

They even sell pierogie ornaments!!!! I am ordering one, well maybe a dozen, it just seems like pierogie’s should be talked about by the dozen!  (Why have I not seen these before!!)

Connect to the Pittsburgh Organizations via Social Media

out
Social-Media-CampaignImage by Gary Hayes via FlickrPittsburgh Parks Conservatory is a non profit organization that supports the parks in the city of Pittsburgh. They have been doing some great things in Schenley Park. Pittsburgh Parks Conservatory has set up on Facebook and Twitter to make it easier for you to follow their good work. The Mattress Factory does a great job of updating their Twitter account too.

What other Pittsburgh Organizations are you following on Facebook and Twitter?

Are you involved with an organization in Pittsburgh and want to get started with some social media outreach? I would start by setting up a fan page on Facebook.

Follow IheartPGH on Facebook and Twitter too.

7 Reasons to Love Pittsburgh and Steelers Fans

Lynn Swann campaigning in Philadelphia on 2006...Image via WikipediaThe Baltimore Examiner has an article that lists 7 reasons to hate Steelers fans but I kind of think this is nice list of things to love about Pittsburgh. Lets take a look at what each of these “complaints” reveal about Pittsburgh. Which one of these do you like most about Pittsburgh.

7. “Is that mustard in your ‘stache?”

Pittsburghers store Primanti Brothers‘ french fries in their flavor savers for the winters along the confluence. Nothing reminds me that I have a friend in Pennsylvania like spotting a 300-pound guy eating a sausage while stuffed in a Mazda truck with a Steelers’ license plate driving down I-95. Yes, nobody is watching — go ahead and use your face as a napkin.

7. Primanti Brothers – I think there are many people out there who would say this is a reason to love the PGH.

6. “The family trip to Ocean City”

Fellow Marylanders, you know you’re in for a treat when you get stuck behind an ’87 Chrysler minivan with Pennsylvania tags that read “DOWNY OCEAN.” Nothing says fun in the sun like cruising 4 mph down the Coastal Highway behind this minivan, while its occupants decide which Dumser’s meets their culinary standards. Hey, you guys have three rivers –pick one and make it a weekend.

6. We may vacation in Maryland but we choose to live in Pittsburgh the other 51 weeks out of the year.

5. “Let me barrow a dowlar for a pop”

When your regional diction makes you sound like Burgess Meredith with a nose filled with gauze, you should probably phase out speaking in public. Here’s a rule: One out of every seven words you say has to be discernible to the rest of the country.

5. Pittsburghese – we have our own vocabulary and we are proud of it n’at.

4. “Hey, get off my towel”

I like these “Terrible Towels.” Its bright yellow, screams “I am woman –hear me roar!” But the look on Steelers fans’ faces when you rip it out of their hands and stomp on it like LenDale White is a gift that keeps giving. They also are quite useful at a tailgate since they burn really, really well.

4. The Terrible Towel – we have sports paraphernalia that is useful

3. “The Mountain Steelers fan”

Is there anything worse than the guy with the one eye that gave up around the second Ronald Reagan administration rocking this ensemble: Stone-washed, black Wranglers with a “Terrible Towel” hanging from the back pocket like Cooter from “The Dukes of Hazzard,” a ‘coon skin hat and a skin-tight Major Harris jersey?

3. I think it is nice that the terrible towel is considered an acceptable accessory for everyone to wear.

2. “Take off the Slayer arena tour T-shirt and step away from the Bradshaw bobblehead”

We here in Baltimore are guilty of living in our past, but Pittsburghers take being stuck in a time warp to a new level. But I’m really happy the NFL gift-wrapped Super Bowl XL for you because everyone was so tired of hearing about your 19-freaking-70s teams. If it weren’t for Paul Tagliabue, most of you still would be in your basement putting the finishing touches on your Lynn Swann paint-by the number masterpiece.

2. Pittsburghers have a deep level of respect for history and heritage (especially sports heritage).

1. “Hey, Bob, grab me another Iron City.”

While I’m on the subject of things Pittsburghers like, I have to talk about Iron City beer. The brew’s bottling process begins by dipping a bucket directly into the Allegheny River. From there, it’s taken to a plant where your city’s finest run-off is sifted until the best sewage is ready for distribution.

1. Iron City Beer – Is just a great thing to love about Pittsburgh. It is beer and history all in one. And the first brewery to print sports scenes on the cans. Does Baltimore have its own beer?
