Worlds Weirdest Restaurants, a new show that is being taped for the Food Network Canada, will be at the Waffle Shop tonight (Friday, June 10, 2011) from 10pm-3am.  The public is invited to stop by for waffles and to watch the show.  Can’t make it East Liberty – as always you can watch the Waffle Shop streaming live at WaffleShop.org.

Worlds Weirdest Restaurants will be hosted by Bob Blumer – he currently hosts the show Glutton for Punishment.

WWR’s host Bob Blumer will spend the evening cooking, serving, and participating in a packed night of interactive talk shows. The general public is encouraged to come by, dine, and take part!

The evening’s line up will feature local artist’s talk shows designed to instigate intrigue and spur interaction. In addition to waffle cuisine there will be a variety of live interactive shows including Dave English passing his torch as the host of “The Unemployment Show”, T. Foley performing a talk show hosted by a ventriloquist dummy who’s reticent to perform in public, Terry Boyd’s “Anonymous Costumed Guest Hour” as well as cameos from other local favorites.

What is the Waffle Shop? Do they really serve waffles?

From the Waffle Shop website:

The Waffle Shop is a neighborhood restaurant that produces and broadcasts a live-streaming talk show with its customers, operates a changeable storytelling billboard on its roof, and runs a take-out window that sells food from countries engaged in conflict with the U.S. The shop is a public lab that brings together people from all walks of life to engage in dialogue, experimentation and the co-production of culture. The project functions as a classroom for students from Carnegie Mellon University, an eatery, a TV production studio, a social catalyst, and a business. Our customers are our funders, audience, and participants as we film during open hours, inviting interested patrons to express their unique opinions and personalities.

The Waffle Shop is supported by the School of Art at Carnegie Mellon University, The Center for the Arts In Society, East Liberty Development Inc, We Do Property, Sota Construction Services, the Sprout Fund, Whole Foods, and the sale of waffles.

The Waffles Are That Good

“The waffles are that good” was a line from the email sent to me by my friend Lesley – she stopped into Waffalonia for a quick dinner and was delighted with the entire experience.  I suggested she write a little review of Waffalonia – here is her rave review of the place.

Waffalonia is located on Murray avenue near Forbes in Sq. Hill – this is the space where Dozen cupcakes used to be located.

You may not have noticed, but Squirrel Hill is home to another delicious new eatery.  Tucked in between Coldstone Creamery and Razzy Fresh, you could easily miss Wafflonia, the recently opened Belgian waffle shop on Murray Avenue.  I strongly caution against this.  I lived in Belgium for two years.  Over there waffles are street food, made fresh, served in wax paper, and eaten while strolling around town.  They are considered more for snacks or dessert than breakfast.  Folks, Wafflonia is the real deal: delicious, cheap, and easy-going.  I visited Wafflonia recently at the end of a long work day.  The waffles are crunchy on the outside, warm and sugary on the inside.  I quickly devoured mine, then licked my fingers clean. My spirits brightened instantly.  With its understated décor and warm lighting, Wafflonia is the perfect place to duck into on a chilly late winter evening.  When the weather warms up, we will simply adapt by ordering the waffle-ice cream combo.  Or maybe the waffle with nutella and bananas. Wafflonia deserves to be a huge success.  Go there.  Go there now.

Links Worth a Look – February 15th

Here are some links/articles/blog posts that are worth a look:

  • Free Waffles on Wednesday, February 17, 2010 – Free waffles – made with magic – networking and conversation – this Wednesday at the DeepLocal waffles. We stopped by for Waffles at the December waffle Wednesday – great group of people and good coffee.
  • Walking to New Orleans – Al Hoff, who is also the brains behind the blog – City of Sad Toys – has started a new project. She is virtually walking from Pittsburgh to New Orleans. Each day she logs how many miles she walks and plots that on a map of the route from Pittsburgh to New Orleans. Each post includes some history and background about the locations she is virtually walking through.
  • Coming this Spring – New Public Market opens in the Strip District – From PopCity Media "The Pittsburgh Public Market will have space for 42 vendors, ranging from fresh and prepared foods to arts and crafts to local, seasonal produce. So far, vendors will include: 21st Street Coffee and Tea, Elysian Fields Farm, Pittsburgh Candy Buffet, Tracy's Treats natural skincare products and more. The market will be open Friday through Sunday each week."

Live from East Liberty … its the Waffle Shop

I wanted to make sure to post about this before the spring semester ends.  I have made a few visits to the Waffle Shop in the past few months.

The Waffle Shop is a class project for the undergraduate art course – The Storefront Project which is taught at Carnegie Mellon.  Last semester it was Waffle Shop – a reality tv show.  For the spring semester it is Waffle Shop – The Talk Show.  The venue, which is the former tuxedo shop located at the corner of Highland and Baum in East Liberty has seen quite a transformation this semester.   The professor who was serving up waffles when I was there recently said there are more design students in the class this semester.

I think this project has been great for the neighborhood – what was once a vacant storefront is now filled with a range of people – CMU students, waffle seekers like me and even some high school students from the neighborhood.

The talk show aspect makes this more than just a place to eat waffles but a place to start a community conversation.  I am not sure what will happen to the shop over the summer – but I do hope that this project will continue in the fall – or someone will make this a real waffle shop.
