Cafe Reopens at The Union Project

We are thrilled to learn that the cafe space at The Union Project has reopened as Cafe Ola Appetite! The Union Project is a former church that through a lot of volunteer work has been transformed into a community space.  The cafe closed a few years ago and they have been searching for the right person to take over the cafe space.

The Union Project is located at the corner of Stanton and Negly Avenues in East Liberty.  It is a great place to meet for a lunch or coffee meeting because there is a bus stop right out front and plenty of street parking.

Sharing Good Ideas for a Better Pittsburgh – A Look at Ending Homelessness

I have been thinking a lot about how Pittsburgh could be an amazing urban test lab for some of the best ideas from around the country.  Pittsburgh is a big city that isn’t too big and Pittsburghers are passionate and ready to help other people who are in need.  I continue to be awestruck by just the power of the bloggers who have been collaborating on charity projects and have been raising money and doing good things for Pittsburgh and beyond.

We have some good ideas happening here in Pittsburgh – for example – The Union Project has transformed an abandoned church is to a thriving community center while teaching others how to restore stained glass windows.  And there are some good ideas happening around the country that maybe we should try here in Pittsburgh too.

The great thing about blogging is that it is a great way to share ideas and improve.  I hope we can have more conversations and more sharing here on IheartPGH or we can even start a new blog if that is need for getting more good ideas going here in Pittsburgh.

I was just reading this article on NPR about Common Ground – an organization in New York City that has been working to end homelessness – they turned an abandoned hotel in Times Square into a shelter with services and have tackled cronic homelessnes in Time Square.

A few years ago I was in Chicago for a conference hosted by the League of Young Voters – and we happened to have breakfast at the Inspiration Cafe.  It turns out that not only was this an amazing place to have breakfast but this cafe was part of a large project to end homelessness in Chicago.  It looks like the model there has changed a bit since I was there and I am not sure if they still serve meals to the public – but their work to end homelessness has not changed.  Inspiration cafe operates a cafe and offers services to those who are homeless – including things like voicemail and job training by working in the cafe and in their training kitchen.

Do you know of other innovative organizations working on homelessness here in Pittsburgh or around the country?  What else could be added to this list and what should we be trying here in Pittsburgh?

Food for Fashion – December 6

This must be the year of great collaborations.  I have been spending all morning finalizing some details for the Steelers Watching/Chevy Test Drive Party on Sunday – I will post all the details as soon as I get everything finalized.

But I am also happy to share this event on Monday – which is another great collaboration – 3 local vintage businesses, Daffodil Vintage, Red Pop Shop, Crazy Hot Clothes are teaming up to throw a fashion show.  Each of these businesses operates online from their homes here in Pittsburgh so this is a rare chance to check out their goods in person.  All of this is also for a great cause – the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

So come on down to the Union Project on Monday evening – check out some amazing recycled fashion and gifts, support local businesses.  There will be cookies and you can pretend to laugh at my jokes too – I am honored to be the master of ceremonies for this event (I will be spending the weekend brushing up my fashion vocabulary).  The music will be excellent as DJ Gordy will be making the music selections for the evening. So you have always wanted to open a cafe?

Maybe you are sitting at your desk right now – reading IheartPGH and other hilarious blogs – just trying to make it to 5pm.  You have dreams of opening your own cafe – spending your days brewing coffee and talking to regular customers.  Well here are 2 opportunities here in Pittsburgh that might just be the ticket to your own cafe with the support of some great Pittsburgh community organizations.

Open Your Own Business – First up, the Union Project is accepting proposals for their cafe space.  If you are a long time reader of this blog you know that I am a huge fan of the Union Project and was a frequent visitor of their cafe.  For a variety of reasons the cafe at the Union Project has been closed for the past year.  Now the Union Project is accepting proposals for a new tenant to run the cafe space.  The Union Project, located at the corner of Stanton and Negley Ave in East Liberty, is a former church that has been transformed into a community center.  The church offices have been rented out to other businesses and artists, the former sanctuary is a large event space available for rentals and the basement is a ceramics studio that offers classes and open studio hours. Have You Ever Had A Black Amish Apple?

Apples are an all-American success story-each ...

The answer is probably not – because it is a pretty rare type of apple.  But it is apple time here in western PA and you can get your fill of all kinds of apples at the 5th Annual Apple Fest.

Help put Pittsburgh on the mao as the Apple Pie Baking capital of the world!  Complete with an apple pie competition – stop by the union project to pick up some apples – including the Black Amish Apple – apple pies, pork sandwiches and more tasty fall treats.

The Black Amish Apple is a very rare – heirloom apple (so rare I can’t find anything about it on wikipedia!) Slowfood Pittsburgh is honoring the Black Amish Apple at the Apple fest on Saturday.  And the Black Amish Apple has been identified by a national initive – Renewing America’s Food Traditions – which is working to conserve and bring back heirloom apples.  You can read more about the Black Amish Apple in the Post-Gazette here.  And the Pittsburgh City Paper has  more on apples here.
