A lecture on how modern architecture came to Pittsburgh and see more than 50 notable sites in Allegheny County from 1903 to 1996: churches, schools, apartment buildings, private residences, banks, clubs, commercial buildings, theaters, a municipal building, golf club house, corporate skyscrapers, parks, and bridges and highways. You will learn and become familiar with the design vocabulary that distinguishes notable modern architecture throughout North America––and will have a peek into local 21^st Century design trends, too.

This lecture is based on a guidebook published by the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation in 2013––Pittsburgh Architecture in the Twentieth Century: Notable Modern Buildings and Their Architects, by Albert M. Tannler. Louise Sturgess, who served as project director and editor, took many of the 250-plus color photos in the guidebook.
