To enter – we ask that you help save Christmas for some folks served by a local nonprofit.  Please help support the Community Human Services Holiday Gift Project.  (We’ve helped raise funds for this each holiday season and we are currently only at HALF what we raised last year.

Before I share today’s giveaways – I just wanted to share a quick fact about the CHS Food Pantry, this is one of the many reasons that I am supporting this organization this holiday season.

In Sep 2012 – the CHS food pantry served 366 people, in Nov. 2013 – they served 1001 people. That is over a 200% increase in need right here in Pittsburgh.

Here are the next 4 items we’re giving away (you can still enter to win items 1-4 here.)

#5. 2 tickets for a Grains to Glass Tour of East End Brewing ($50 value) – this is one of the best ways to spend an afternoon in Pittsburgh.

#6. 2 1-hour passes to Kayak Pittsburgh ($30 value) – one of the best ways to spend a summer afternoon in Pittsburgh is on the river

#7. A $25 Gift Certificate to East End Book Exchange – yes! There are still independent book stores in Pittsburgh.  East End Book Exchange is located in Bloomfield and carries new and used books.

#8. Tiny Clutch no. 5 from Moopbeautifully bags that are loved all over the world, but made by hand right here in Pittsburgh.

Enter to win one of these via the Rafflecopter widget below!  If you want to just contribute to CHS you can do that here.

Bringing Back the Book Shops – You’re Invited to the East End Book Exchange Grand Opening

a peek at the new home of East End Book Exchange

Last July my friend Lesley wrote a post about wanting to open a book shop in Pittsburgh.  I wrote a follow up post reminicing about all of the book shops that used to be open in Sq. Hill and Oakland.  I am happy to write yet another post to tell you about the next chapter of East End Book Exchange!

For the past year – the East End Book Exchange operated out of the Pittsburgh Public Market – open each Friday, Saturday and Sunday with an extensive collection of books for their little space.

While the Pittsburgh Public Market may be struggling as a market – it has been the perfect incubator for Pittsburghers to test out their businesses before moving to a storefront.  The Crested Duck Charcuterie started out in the public market before opening a store front in Beechview and they just announced they are expanding again!

    East End Book Exchange

This Saturday the East End Book Exchange opens the doors to their new permanent location on Liberty Ave in Bloomfield.  Just down the street from The Big Idea Bookshop – Bloomfield is the perfect home for a used book shop.  There are also at least 3 other awesome resale shops on Liberty Ave – including the newly opened Clothes Minded.  Making Liberty Avenue a perfect place for vintage shopping and browsing unique finds in clothing, books and more.

Read more about the East End Book Exchange in Pop City Media here.

Everyone is invited to their grand opening celebration on Friday night – get a sneak peek and pick up your favorite books before the shop officially opens on Saturday.

  • Holiday Card Writing Party & Let Us Send a Pgh Post Card for You

Holiday Card Writing Party & Let Us Send a Pgh Post Card for You

Its Chrismas Card time.  Cards are fun to get but sometimes a pain to write and send.  There is just something great about getting a letter in your mailbox that has been hand addressed.  Sure, we have email and text messaging but there is something about putting words to paper and sending them through the mail.

A few weeks ago when I was browsing through the books at the EEBE I noticed a facinating book of love letters, which got me thinking about letters and modern day communications.  Another fascinating thing about used books is looking at the inscriptions – who bought the books and what did they write on the inside cover to the recipients.

The East End Book Exchange, Pittsburghs newest used book shop, wants to help revive the written word and they are hosting a card party.  Today, Sunday, December 11 head down to the Pittsburgh public market for a card writing party.
