Workshop for Handmade/Crafty Sellers – The Business of Craft – Sat. July 24

My booth and Crafts N'At Pittsburgh

One of the things that makes Pittsburgh great – is the affordable cost of living here.  In recent years, a number of groups have started to promote and support local crafters and artists. Now there are lots of festivals, some shops and websites where you can purchase interesting, one of a kind, handmade items from local artists and crafters.  Over the past few years the craft seen in Pittsburgh has flourished with a couple of different groups working to promote handmade businesses.  A few years ago, I had a ton of fun spending an afternoon with some of the crafters at the beehive talking blogs and business and I honored to be included on their panel on social media this weekend.  Not only is the crafting movement a good thing for the local economy but its great to see  a groups of passionate people supporting their businesses and creating a fun community in Pittsburgh.

BusinessofCraftLogoThe Business of Craft is a day long workshop this Saturday, hosted by the Pittsburgh Craft Collective.  This is a day of workshops and speakers focused on how to improve your crafting business.  While this is being organized by crafters – I think that many of the topics will also apply to small business as well and there will lots of info on using the internet to promote your business.

I will be one of the panelists talking about social media and small business.  I am looking forward to meeting these amazing other presenters Tara Gentile of Scoutiegirl.com, Carrie Nardini of I Made It! Market, Alissa Martin of Pavement, Michelle Hammons of Burgh Baby, Mundania Horvath of Steeltown Anthem. Continue reading

I Made It and Handmade Arcade Gifts Ideas

Handmade Arcade (Pittsburgh)

A few weeks ago I had the great fortune to meet some of the folks who work at ModCloth, an online retailer of fabulous fashions that is based here in Pittsburgh.  One of the cool tools I learned about is Polyvore – which is a website that lets you “clip” your favorite items and group them into sets to share on your blog, Facebook and Twitter.   I have been having some fun creating sets of items for Spreadshirt so I thought I would do the same for IheartPGH too. (I have even set up an IheartPGH group on Polyvore here).

My first Polyvore set for IheartPGH is a round up of some items from vendors who were at the I Made It Market or Handmade Arcade.  (I wanted to add even more but for some reason – you can’t clip images from Etsy to Polyvore 🙁 ).

Here are just a few of the goodies that were available – click on each item to learn more about it and visit the website of the vendor. Most of the vendors are from Pittsburgh too!

Did you buy any handmade gifts? Who were your favorite vendors? Please share more links to Etsy shops in the comments.

Links Worth a Look – December 8th

Here are some links/articles/blog posts that are worth a look:

  • So Me – New Shop in Glenshaw – Check out this post from the Pittsburgh Craft Collective (with photos) of a new shop that has just opened in Glen Shaw. So Me features gifts from local artists and crafters.
  • A Safe Street in Pittsburgh: Interesting Times : The New Yorker – Pittsburgh's City of Asylum project and the North Side's Sampsonia Way are profiled in the New Yorker. "City of Asylum/Pittsburgh provides sanctuary to writers exiled under threat of death, imprisonment, or persecution in their native countries."
  • Rusty Waters Apparel – more awesome Pittsburgh t-shirts. Check out the one with the directional arrows – such an accurate depiction of our roadways.

Follow IheartPGH on Twitter – we share more links there almost daily!
