a special day for Pittsburgh’s best neighbor

As you know we here at I heart PGH are not big on celebrities – but this post is about one special friend of Pittsburgh, who probably did not consider himself a celebrity.

March 20th marks the birthday of Mr. Rogers – yes that is the Mr. Rogers of Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood.

Yes another important claim to fame – Pittsburgh was home to Mr. Rogers and Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood was filmed right here in Pittsburgh. Not only is this one of the best and most loved children’s television shows ever, but Fred Rogers was an outstanding person and gave much to Pittsburgh and children around the world.

But I would also reccomend googling “Fred Rodgers” – There are just many wonderful things that were writen about Mr. Rogers after his death that describe what type of person he was. And if you had the great fortune of meeting him in person, as I can attest to, he was just true to character.

I added Mr. Roger’s birthday to my calendar a few years ago and when it popped up as today’s reminder – I did a quick google search to double check the date. I came across some lovely writings about Mr. Rogers. I think that both of these articles demostrate what type of person Mr. Rogers was…

(I found these articles this morning and I have thought about them all day – I was just about to turn out the lights but I decided that I had to get out my computer and recognize Mr. Roger’s birthday).

Its getting Chili in Braddock – but for a good cause…

One of the best things to love about Pittsburgh is the many Carnegie Libraries. Not only are the many branches of the carnegie Library awesome because they are full of books and vidoes and interesting knowledge that is free to the public but most of the libraries are located in amazing historic buildings that have other cool things liek swimming pools and musical halls.
If you are not from Pittsburgh – the short story is that Andrew Carnegie was a guy that made a lot of money in Pittsburgh with steel mills and other industries. He wanted to give something back to his employees and built libraries/community centers.

The Carnegie Library in Braddock was the first one built and it is way more than books – it also has a musical hall and pottery studio and museum for the first battle of the French and Indian war complete with contemporary artifacts.

Pittsburghese in the NY Times

signs A reader has alerted us to a profile of Pittsburghese in the New York Times. Fine eating and drinking establishments in the South Side and Bloomfield are given their due. Oh, those East Coasters can’t get enough of our freakiness. This is my favorite part of the article:

Julie Schoonover, the barkeeper from Corning, had described the dialect of the Steel City (a k a Pixburgh) more succinctly: “If you want to hear some freaky talk, go to Pittsburgh,” she told me. “It’s all ‘yinz goin’ dahntahn’ down there.”
