  • WYEP – 91.3 FM

Thanks to WYEP, I can’t listen to commercial radio anymore. And that’s a good thing. The station is listener supported, and they play a mellow, interesting mix of new and old music. I have to admit that sometimes the station gets a little too folksy for my tastes, but they also take requests. When a friend from out of town visited me, he was amazed to hear Johnny Cash played up right against the Pet Shop Boys. Bands I have heard about through ‘YEP through the years include Tegan & Sara, Raul Malo, Ray LaMontagne, Jump Little Children, Andrew Bird, Shivaree, Citizen Cope, the list goes on and on …

The station has a rockin’ website at:
    http://www.wyep.org/

It contains great information on the CD Live! series and other community programs. (For example, they are building a new Community Broadcast Center.) Check out their concert calendar here:

One other thing I like about the website is that you can actually see all of their playlists in case you didn’t catch the name of that weird blues tune you heard at 6am :

So forgo loud car commercials and abrasive commercial DJs forever … tune in to 91.3 and makes your ears happy.

PS – They canceled their membership campaign this fall, so this is a great time to start listening.

  • The Union Project

The Union Project On the border between East Liberty & Highland Park at the corner of Negley and Stanton is the community center that the community built. For the past 4 years volunteers have been working to restore and remodel an old deterioating church in to a useful, attractive and modern community center.
Rather than hiring someone to restore the stained glass windows the Union Project has offered stained glass classes and the students have done the work of repairing the windows.
The Union Project will house offices for a variety of community groups, meeting space, performance space and a coffee shop.
They are still offering stained glass classes and are always looking for volunteers.

  • The Shadow Lounge

Just a few years ago, before Whole Foods, East Liberty was not a destination for many people. Now Highland Avenue’s activity expands beyond shadyside and the Shadow Lounge sits in the middle of this new found nighborhood at the corner of Highland and Baum Blvd.

I am so glad Pittsburgh has Justin Strong who opened the Shadow Lounge 5 years ago to provide a coffee shop and performance space because there was no other place for performers.

The Shadow Lounge hosts a whole range of music and performances. By far the best late night place in Pittsburgh (I was there on a Saturday last winter to hear the house band and we didn’t leave til 4 am because they were so good)

In the past year they have expanded to add the Blue Room with a projection TV. Soon they will have a liqour liscense.

Check out the website to see what is happening.
