Its getting Chili in Braddock – but for a good cause…

One of the best things to love about Pittsburgh is the many Carnegie Libraries. Not only are the many branches of the carnegie Library awesome because they are full of books and vidoes and interesting knowledge that is free to the public but most of the libraries are located in amazing historic buildings that have other cool things liek swimming pools and musical halls.
If you are not from Pittsburgh – the short story is that Andrew Carnegie was a guy that made a lot of money in Pittsburgh with steel mills and other industries. He wanted to give something back to his employees and built libraries/community centers.

Carnegie Library in Braddock
The Carnegie Library in Braddock was the first one built and it is way more than books – it also has a musical hall and pottery studio and museum for the first battle of the French and Indian war complete with contemporary artifacts.
Visit the Carnegie Library in Braddock’s web page for more information on the history of the building
Better yet – why not attend the Braddock Library Chili Cook-Off Fundraiser.

Steelers fight songs to help fans sing team to victory

This article in the Post-Gazette last week features some of the Steelers Songs – “Steelers fight songs to help fans sing team to victory”

I thought I would include the lyrics to the Steelers fight song for your review

Stiller Fight Song (70’s version)

Da-Da-Da-Da-Ta-Da – Charge!

We’re from the town with that great football team,
We cheer the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Chuck Noll and all his friends are all on the field.
Go out and get them Steelers.

Bradshaw, and Rocky, and Franco and Lynn,
We love you Pittsburgh Steelers.
It’s been many years in coming,
just keep that Steelers machinery humming

Defense, Defense, make them scramble, intercept that ball.
Defense, Defense, keeps the Steelers always best of all!
Mean Joe, Mean Joe, do your thing against the other team,
You start from year to year, we’re so glad you play here,
Now join with me, and sing the Steelers cheer-er-ER!

We’re from the town with that great football team,
We cheer the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Winning’s a habit, not only a dream,
Go out and get them Steelers!

Gerela’s Gorrilas are here for the show,
and so is Franco’s Army,
It’s been many years in coming,
just keep that Steelers machinery humming.

Offense, Offense, take that football whole way up the field!
Offense, Offense, let’s score and score and never ever yield!
Franco, Franco, can you believe we have a running game?

The Steelers are so great, and so hard to overrate,
Good things, will come, to those who work and wait.

Charge!

Wake Up to a Poem

Oh this is just one of those things that makes you realize Pittsburgh is filled with creative smart people. Check out this service (based in Pittbsurgh) that lets you set up a wake up call where you pick the artist or a poem for your wake up call – Tele-Art.org

I am particularly fond of the story behind this project. From Tele-Art.org…

Alexi

I keep sleeping through the alarm. But a phone call gets me up every time.

Damien

So just get a wake up call.

Alexi

I don’t know…I don’t have any money…

Damien

I bet they have something on the web where they call you with an ad and it’s free.

Alexi

. It would be cooler if you could wake up with a poem. How hard would that be to do?

Damien

Well…all you would have to do is XXXXX, XXX, and XXXXX then XXXX software XXXX server XXXX, XXXXX phone XXXXX, XXXX mp3s maybe XXXX agents XXX. Something like that

Alexi

We should write a grant.

WRCT

wrct

Ever since I posted about WYEP being a great public radio station, I felt guilty. Why? Because I listen to WRCT 88.3 probably just as much as I do WYEP. Why? Because where else can you hear Democracy Now, Japanese experimental music, the Saturday Light Brigade, yiddish hip hop, and excrutiatingly geeky analysis of R&B lyrics?

WRCT is the radio station of Carnegie Mellon University. It is located in the basement of the CMU University Center and broadcasts from Warner Hall. The station run as free format radio which means that all programming decisions are left to the descretions of DJs and their programs. This means that I can actually drive to work listening to some pumping house music and leave listening to Nina Simone. But there is some convergence: wanna know what the kids are listenin’ to these days? Check out their Top 70 list. (Glad to see local band Modey Lemon sneak in there at #10!) Never heard any of these bands? Well then listen to WRTC! And if you … hate music, then just listen for the promos (which are pretty weird – and funny.)

Like all good radio stations though, ‘RCT offers online streaming, has a handy dandy list of recently played songs and takes requests at 412-CMU-WRCT (268-9728). iTunes users can add it to their playlist as streaming radio. (Just look under Radio/Public/WRCT.)

I remember when I was in high school in the hills of the the ‘Burgh, I had my uber cool band posters, my flannels and my Docs, and I tried to act like I listened to real, live college stations. But the only place I could get it was in one corner of my basement. Luckily for us, the station has come a long way since then! Apparently they’ve expanded (to 1750 “glorious watts”). And get this – the other day, I could hear it all the way out to the airport. So go and program WRCT on your car radio now. And turn it on when you’re stuck in traffic. You might even catch the Brazilian Radio Hour.

Local freeform Hip-Hop group… BEAM!

Do you miss the cutting edge days of hip-hop music? Are you looking for refreshing, genre-bending musical artists? Do you think the local music scene consists solely of punk bands and really bad “spoken word” hipsters?

Local jazz/hip-hop band Beam turns conventional hip-hop music on its head at their monthly gigs at the Pittsburgh Deli Company. From 10pm to midnight the first Friday of every month, at PDC in Shadyside, this 5 piece ensemble will blow your mind.

Drummer David Throckmorton (aka Throck Ock) pounds out the classic breakbeats, uptempo jungle beats, spacey jazz rhythms, and funky rock n roll stylings and directs the free flowing improv between all five band members: bass player, “space bass” effects generator, dart-spittin MC, and champion DJ Supa C.

These guys are amazing. They play a variety of composed hip-hop tunes and freeform improvisational psychedelic hip-hop that goes all over the map. Akil Esoon’s rhymes range from narrative gangsta fables to insightful political commentaries to playful party freestyles. Supa C’s DJing, scratching, cutting, and beat juggling skills perfectly compliment the funky rhythm section. As soon as Akil finishes spittin an ill verse, Supa C will start cutting up some classic ’90s vocals. Steve “Lantronics” Landay, orchestrator of the “space bass” rig, adds psychedelic soundscapes that give an extra layer to the music, rarely found in hip-hop.

These guys are definately at THE TOP of the local music scene, producing sounds and styles you can’t hear anywhere else. It’s a hip-hop revolution right before your very eyes.

It’s too bad PDC is such an “alterna-coffeeshop-crowd” and nobody dances! But they have fine beer selections, to be sure….
