Git Aht! – Things To Do This Weekend

(Things to do while making all that pudding…)

Friday, October 20
Pittsburgh Gay & Lesbian Film Fest, 8:00 p.m., South Side Works, Sahsside
The nine day film festival opens with a screening of “Short Bus“, the John Cameron Mitchell (“Hedwig and the Angry Inch”) film that’s causing a bit of controversy because it (allegedly) contains “real” sex, but it’s integral to the story, so I guess that’s ok. Not that I’m complaining, mind you. Hell, I’ve got the First Amendment tattooed on, ummm… Tattooed on my… uhh… Let’s just say I’ve got a First Amendment tattoo and leave it at that. It’ll be at South Side Works and not the Garden on the North Side, probably because the Garden has the exclusive local engagement of “Snakes On A Jane”. (Note: Strictly a fanciful jest! I don’t know what the Garden’s running these days.) The important thing here to remember is that this is indeed an adult film. For grown-ups. 18 and above is what I’m saying. Don’t bring the kids, unless you’re like a super-ultra-uber progressive parent, and even then, y’know… I mean, this is beyond Friday Night Skinemax After Dark stuff.

(Eds. Note: All right! Point made! Move the hell on!)

Right. The PGLFF is throwing an opening night party at the Hot Metal Grille tonight, so stop by there after checking out “Bus” or the other featured film at South Side Works, “The Gymnast”, a “romantic drama explor(ing) the developing relationship between an acrobatic young woman and the Asian-American woman who performs with her.” The fest runs at various venues around town check the schedule early and often.

(Thanks to Nat for sending this one in!)

Soulcialism, 10:00 p.m., White Eagle Club, Sahsside
soulcialism Sweat, booze, good music, dancing. As long as Juddy and Soccer John keep throwing these gigs, I’ll keep writing about them, because I love 60s Soul music, I love cheap drinks, and I love dancing with girls who love 60’s Soul Music and cheap drinks.

Blindsider CD Release Party, 10:00 p.m., Shadow Lounge, ‘Sliberty
blindsider Local band Blindsider releases a CD and this is the party for it. With a self-described sound of “David Hasselhoff meets Wesley Willis”, this should be a good one. I checked out a couple of their tunes on their myspace page (Dude, like everyone has a myspace page now) and it’s not bad, even on first, bleary-eyed Friday morning listen.

Also playing at the party, Life In Bed and Donora. I’m guessing not the entire town of Donora, just a few of them. I mean, Shadow’s pretty roomy and everything, but I dunno of they could fit an entire Mid-Mon valley town in there. Besides, most of them would want to smoke, and they’d have to go outside.

Saturday, October 21
Mensa Test, 10:00 a.m., 1207 Fifth Ave, Dahntahn
mensagroupI dunno about this one. From the posting on Craigslist:

“Mensa is an organization whose sole criteria for membership is a score at or above the 98th percetile on a standardardized IQ tsst.”

But, ok, I’m not the smartest person, but I am smart enough to realize that maybe, just maybe, this is some new way of spelling with which I am unfamiliariar.

(Yes, yes, a thousand times yes, I know I can’t spell either. But I ain’t in Mensa. And there’s a good reason for that. It’s ’cause I’m none too bright.)

Pitt vs. Rutgers – Homecoming 5:45 p.m. Heinz Field
ditkaHands up everyone who thought back when they announced the schedule that this would be a big game? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Right. But it is, what with Pitt being 6-1 and Rutgers coming into Heinz undefeated with 6 wins of their own. So the game itself should be competitive, and it is getting national tv.

swerskiBut there are a whole bunch of other events tied into Pitt’s homecoming weekend, not the least of which is the tremendous tailgating sure to take place on a crisp, sunny (so they say) Autumn afternoon. So, let’s say, hypothetically, Mini-Ditka shows up to your tailgate, and he challenges you to a drinking contest, he even spots you a 10 red solo cup lead. Do you win?

No. No you don’t. You know who wins? Mini-Ditka. Why? ‘Cause he’s just like Ditka, only mini.

The Great Ants, 10:00p.m., 31st Street Pub, The Strip
ga_bassDear Great Ants Bass Player,

I love you. I want to marry you and have, like, 10,000 babies. Well, I mean, like… I wouldn’t, like, actually have them. I mean.. That’d be, y’know… You and all. But I’d be waaaaay supportive and shit. Yeah. I totally would. Ferreals.

Call me, we’ll go bowling or something.

Yours Truly,
Git Aht

Sunday, October 22
Love Letters, 2:00 p.m., Heinz Hall, Dahntahn
See, it’d be so easy to drop the “Hey, It’s Jeannie and Barney Miller” vibe on this one, but they both have had really good, long careers. I mean, Barbara Eden has a resume a mile long, and Hal Linden has been a Broadway star forever, even winning a Tony in 1971 for Best Actor in a Musical. So, I kinda feel as if they’re owed a great deal of respect and admiration for their work, and I don’t want to trivialize it by making a cheap jo…

Ah, screw it. Go see Jeannie and Barney Miller in a play. It’ll be good for sure.

UPDATE: Jeannie and Barney have better things to do, apparently, as this one is CANCELLED! (Thanks to eagle-eyed, awesomely-named Monolithic JJ for letting us know.)

George Romero’s Fright Nights, 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m., Chevrolet Amphitheater, Station Square
notldThey’re coming to get you Barbara.. Wait, what? Oh.. Sorry Barbara.. You’ve got to go to them. And pay admission. And pay for parking. But still.. I mean, it is Romero’s name on it, so one has to assume high zombie quality. He’s like the Tiffany of anything Undead-related. A name you can count on, in other words.

This runs through the first weekend in November, so if you can’t make it tonight, you’ll still have plenty of opportunity to get there. Or lurch there. Whichever.

Git Aht! – Things To Do This Weekend

(Things to do while trying to figure out how to get into Folino’s without proper ID…)

Friday, October 13
Scitech Spectacular, 5:30 p.m., Carnegie Science Center, North Shore Side

do_and_dont
Correct (left) and then, y’know… not so much.

“Ride a Freakin’ Segway!” is what this one boils down to. Oh, ok, those guys that did the Mentos/Diet Coke dancing Waters thing are gonna be there too this weekend, (I hope accompanied by a tape of Claire De Lune) but really, this is all about the opportunity to look as White & Nerdy as possible, captaining the device that was supposed to “change the way cities are built” around an obstacle course in the best possible time. If there aren’t prizes, there damn well should be. I dunno, pocket protectors or something… Gold-plated 20-sided dice maybe…

The Scitech Spectacular is full of cool things to do beyond the Segway, like the Rinspeed Senso, a car that ” senses the driver” and looks like the kind of thing you’d hop into to chase down people running away from Carousel. There’s a Hi-Tech (their spelling, not mine, some sort of marketing thing, I think) Sports and vehicles show, river education tours (Like, you get educated, not the river. The river was home-schooled and anyway, it don’t need your education, it don’t need your thought control), and all manner of other events, but allow me to reiterate: Ride A Freakin’ Segway. End of story.

Sound Bytes, 9:00 p.m., Wood Street Galleries, Dahntahn
kilmerWood Street Galleries continues it’s Sound Bytes series, a mixture of Art and Music with Natura Nasa, who are described as sounding like “something like a nightmare and a flying dream”. Gotcha, I dig it. I love flying dreams, personally. Hell, I just enjoy dreams. Like… Anyone else have that dream where you see yourself standing in sort of sun-god robes on a pyramid, with a thousand naked women screaming and throwing little pickles at you? No?

Saturday, October 14
St. Benedict The Moor/Epiphany Nationality Food Fest/Frankie Capri, 2:00 p.m., Uptahn
This weeks winner of the prestigious “Longest Item Title” award…

I received the following important communique from the Dishers

“The man, the myth, the legend, Frankie Capri is performing at the St. Benedict the Moor/Epiphany Food Fest this Saturday from 2-5. Heck, I thought he was dead. If you haven’t seen Frankie before, it’s a once in a lifetime experience.”

“Ethnic food and the complete and utter lunacy of Mr. Capri. What’s not to like?”

I couldn’t have said it better myself, which is probably why they’re what I like to call “writers” and I’m more of a scribbler. Or a typist with a gift for googling local events. Whichever. The Fest runs all weekend and also has a Tiki Lounge. One more thing, and I have saved the best for last: they will be serving free beer during the Steelers game on Sunday. Lemme say that again: FREE BEER. Do I have to draw you a drunken picture? ‘Cause if I do, it’ll be a charcoal rendering of Sienna Miller. In the style of Renoir, if you know what I mean. Yeah!

Speaking of which, Sienna, baby doll, you never wrote to me. What’s up wit dat? My sweet limey love muffin, you’re only in town for a couple more days, and we need to make the most of it. I can get you into Folinos, no problem. They know me there.

OUTrageous Bingo/Flaming Fall Frolic 6:30 p.m. and whenever, Goodwill, Sahsside, then The Sideways 8 Club, Shadyside
“Drinking For A Cause” makes a strong return this weekend with two events that serve as fundraisers for the Shepherd Wellness Community, a local AIDS outreach program. First on the fabulous docket is something called “OUTrageous Bingo”. Allow me to quote from the release: “A very VERY gay old time with a drag show at intermission.” I’m not sure about the booze level at this first one, since it’s at Goodwill, and I don’t think they’ve got a liquor license yet, but it’s located on the Sahsside, so it’s only a matter of time, really. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., games start at 7:30. $15 at the door. Tickets available in advance are $12 and can be purchased at:

  • A Pleasant Present
  • Banner Coin Exchange
  • Klavon’s Ice Cream
  • Tuscany Cafe

And after you’ve had your fill of giggling like Beavis and Butthead every time “O 69” gets pulled from the old ball bucket, (I went to one of those Sunday Night Catholic Church Bingo bashes once, and there was an older lady there who had New Years Eve noisemakers just for when O 69 was pulled), head on up to the Ol’ Sideways 8 Club, which is real life is called the 5801 Video Lounge on Ellsworth (formerly New York, New York just to fully confuse the issue) for the “Flaming Fall Frolic”, where you’ll enjoy $1 off all drinks, free appetizers and the piano stylings of Al Snyder.

Drink and Draw: Burlesque Style , 5:00p.m., Brillobox, Upper Larryville
sallyrandThis one will give me the chance to brush up on my charcoal rendering techniques in advance of my session with Sienna. Brillobox is hosting drop-in model sessions for artists beginning in October, and this is the first one. How it works is, you pay a fee to get in, bring your art supplies, and draw (or paint) the models that will be on hand to pose for you. This session’s theme is burlesque, drawing inspiration from the vaudeville queens and their outrageous costumes. Short description: two models, one in feathers, the other in satin and Lace. No photography or oils, dry mediums and water-based paints acceptable. If the one wearing feathers looks at all like Sally Rand, let me know so I can get up there and propose marriage immediately. Any further questions, call them at 412.621.4900.

(Thanks to Susan for sending this one in… )

Sunday, October 15
Gold Diggers of 1933, 8:00 p.m., Regent Square Theater, Regent Square (Duh.)
kanyeI ain’t sayin’ she a gold digger…

This is a film that was shot in the five year period between the advent of talkies and the enforcement of the Hays Code, so it’s something of a groundbreaker and historical oddity. Filled with sex, money, power, it’s the story of how far a good girl can go before she becomes a bad girl. (Short answer: The Firehouse on a Saturday Night)

The opening scene is chorus girls wearing giant gold coins. Sold.

Long Ago And Far Away, 8:00 p.m., Manchester Craftsmens Guild
ACFFA6Billed as “an original interactive performance created by Kim Nazarian of New York Voices”, Long Ago And Far Away doesn’t have anything to do with Star Wars, from what I can gather, but it still seems to be a good thing to do of a Sunday Evening, and the Steelers will be done by the time this starts. (Hell, they might be done done by the time this thing starts if the offense can’t get something going.)

Git Aht! – Things To Do This Weekend

This week’s Special Edition:

The Sienna Miller To-Do List

sienna_millerSo, Sienna’s having some problems finding things to do while she’s in town filming “Mysteries Of Pittsburgh“, thinks that there’s nothing to do for a girl her age in Pittsburgh. Or as she calls it, in a Rolling Stone interview, “Shitsburgh”.

(I’m not sure of the spelling on that. Should it be two “T”s? Whatever, I know the “H” is supposed to be on the end for sure.)

messApparently, she’s spending all her time, Cheney-like, holed up in in an undisclosed location, specifically, a somewhat unkempt and disheveled hotel room, occasionally popping down to the hotel bar for a smoke and a drink. Not that that’s a bad thing, really, but it does get old after a while, so I understand.

Look, we’ve all been there, any type of work trip, you’re looking for something to do, right?

So Sienna, I’m volunteering to take you out for a night. We’ll find something to do, whatever night of the week it may be. I understand you work a lot of nights, so if necessary, I’ll take a day off, we’ll jaunt around, hopefully get a nice sunny day, take a walk, get some ice cream or something. Strictly platonic, of course, I know you and Jude have rekindled the romance, and that’s great, I mean, for the kids and all.

I don’t think you really hate it here. Or perhaps you do, but I think it’s because you just don’t know what’s going on.

Baby doll, hit me up with the electronic mail at gitaht@gmail.com and we’ll set something up. In the meantime, here’s a list of thing to do today, tomorrow, and Sunday. Try any of ’em, Sienna. Chances are you’ll have more fun than hanging out in the room, watching TV. Besides, you’re used to the BBC, and comparitively, our TV sucks over here, with the notable exception of Pimp My Ride. That show rocks the hizzy, so to speak.

Friday, October 6
Live Music At The Quiet Storm, 9:00 p.m., The Quiet Storm Cafe, Friendship
I’ve never heard of any of these acts, but they’re included for one simple reason: they have awesome names. Anita Fix? Pimps Up Hoedown? Safety Grenade? Winner. You get mentioned.

Sienna, The Quiet Storm is a vegetarian joint, and even though Dilbert doesn’t think we have them, they do exist. It’s a bit of a hipster hangout, so the smoking section may be full. We may have to pop outside for a smoko. No worries though, the weather’s supposed to be fair, a bit chilly, but we’ll bundle up. And I know, you’re travelling, may have left some things at home, so if you need to borrow a jacket or a hoodie, let me know.

Moonsplash On The Mon, 6:00 p.m. South Side Riverfront Park, 18th Street, On the River. (Duh.)
Sponsored by the Friends of the Riverfront, which kinda sounds like a political movement, and in a way it is, I guess. This is a big fund-raiser for the group that protects and restores the riverfronts. Food and wine provided, and music includes Ambient electro-acoustic world music by Life in Balance and the Steel Drum and Reggae sounds of Ras Prophet. There will also be a photography exhibition by Git Aht favorite Renee Rosensteel.

marylynnTickets are a bit pricey at 50 bucks a pop (35 for members, but either way you can cover that out of your per diem, Sienna, and if you can’t then you need new representation), but this is the type of gig that might get you into the Seen column, and that’s always been a dream of mine since I was a lad. (Note: I don’t know if they’ll actually be there, but it’s their type of gig…) But Uricchio just doesn’t want to have anything to do with me, for some reason. Perhaps I should send a box of fine hand-made chocolates to the PG, maybe some flowers. Sienna, we could take a trip to the Strip district, go to Pittsburgh Cut Flowers, and you could help me pick these out. You strike me as the type of person who would have an eye for that sort of thing. I like that.

(Thanks to the fine folks at The Dish for passing this one along.)

Partisan Project 2006, 7:00 p.m., 5151Penn Gallery, 5151 Penn Ave. (Again with the duh.)
And now, a real political party. The Partisan Project is an art exhibition that “the work of designers and artists using their time and talent to help bring about political change.” Now, let’s all get together and guess which party this represents based on one of the sample images from the web site…

If you guessed Whig, you’re wrong, but possibly only slightly, depending on how things roll out next month. Regardless, this is the opening reception, which, as we all know, means food and beverages will be provided, music will be played, and, at least here at 5151Penn, a poetry reading. I’m not sure which side of the political fence you’re on, Sienna, but whichever side it may be, this could be fun and thought-provoking. I’m not saying it’ll snap you out of your funk, but it might help.

Saturday, October 7
Head Of The Ohio, 9:00 a.m., Riverfront Park, North Shore Side
hoto Sienna, perhaps we’ve crossed oars at Henley, eh? Oh, perhaps I’m thinking of someone else. This seems to be the kind of thing you’d enjoy though, as 4,000 rowers converge on our three rivers to participate in one of the largest single-day regattas in the country. Activites beyond just rowing abound, but the main thing here is to watch the rowers, umm, y’know, row. You can take advantage of watching the race from the deck of the Steward Ship where you can “sample sumptuous food and drink while cheering the competitors across the finish line”. No word on whether that sumptuous food will include pierogies or not, but do try to sample one during your stay. Just make sure they’re made by a little old lady that looks, if so motivated, like she could kick your ass and not think twice about it. Like my grandmother. Hoo-ee, one time she beat six kinds of hell out of me with my own shoe, I was bruised for a week, but I did deserve it, after all, rotten kid. Good times, good times…

Scott Hunter, Recent Paintings 6:00 p.m., Planet Art Gallery, Mount Lebanon
Heard about this one here the other day and figured it could use another mention. Planet Art’s a neat space and all, but, well… I’m not familiar at all with Hunter. I mean, the few paintings that I’ve seen online appear to be good, but what do I know? I like dogs playing poker, after all. If it were up to me, though, all art from here forward would consist of various representations of you, Sienna. You got that look I dig the mostest.

Bill Cosby 7:00 and 9:30 p.m., Heinz Hall, Dahntahn
I’m pretty sure I can still recite the album “Himself” word for word. Somewhere along the way, though, Bill started doing a lot of social commentary, so I’m really not sure whether this’ll be a comedy gig or if he’s going to opine. Either way, it is Bill Cosby and that’s pretty much worth it.

And you practically know him, Sienna, since your co-star in “Mysteries” Nick Nolte appeared on the 1976 Emmy Awards with Alan Alda, who worked with Bill in California Suite. I mean, just based on that he’d probably invite us back stage where we could enjoy a pudding pop and a coke. And you say there’s no fun here.

Sunday, October 9
RADical Days at The Warhol, 10:00 a.m., The Warhol, North Shore Side
Ok, I know you’ve been to The Warhol before, back when you were researching the Sedgwick role for the Warhol flick, but hey, you couldn’t possibly have seen it all, right? And because of the Regional Asset District program of making a whole slew o’ cultural events and museums free, we can make up for the sting that the Moonspalsh inflicts on us if your per diem doesn’t cover it. That reminds me… Get me Harvey on the phone, willya? Thanks Marge… Harvey? Hey Harvey, look, we gotta talk about Sienna’s deal. Well, it’s no good, Harvey, it’s no good. She needs more, deserves more. Look, she’s bankable, right? She put asses in seats, Harvey and… What? You’re killin’ me Harvey, you’re killin’ me. Why you gotta break my balls Harvey, huh? Why?

The Burgh Big Band, 8:00 p.m., Rhythm House Cafe, Bridgeville
You like jazz, don’t ya Sienna? It’s an American art form, and I know you spent a lot of time in England and all, but you were born here, you studied with Strasberg here, I’m guessing you’d like the jazz here. The Burgh Big Band swings Sunday night at the Rhythm House in the Bass Bar, which I think is pronounced to rhyme with “ace” and not “ass”. Cause if it were the latter, I think it might be odd for a place called the Rhythm House to have an area named after a fish. Although, they usually have Fish Parmesan as the special on Sundays, so maybe it does make sense. I’m not a big fan of fish parm myself, Sienna, but maybe you’d like it. The important thing is to try, right? Try new things and maybe you’ll like one of them. First things first, though… You need to get out of the bloody hotel and look around a bit.

—————–

So there it is, Sienna, a bunch of things to do. And even if none of these appeal to you, still get in touch with me. We can go to any number of bars and have a good time, but specifically I think we’d have fun up ‘ere at Gooski’s in Polish Hill, where the beer is cold and they have the best juke box in the city. We can sing along to Pulp, and be like the common people. It’ll be fun.

(Update: The Dish offered to take her to the Monterey for Imp ‘n Ahrn. Sounds good to us, espeically because they correctly referred to it as being on the North Side.)
