A very Serious Grill

A very arious grill, originally uploaded by IheartPGH.

I am at the “Duke of Ribs” competition at the Union Project to sample some of Pittsburgh’s finest bbqed meats. I wanted to share a picture of this grill. This grill is hand crafted out of a prototype nuclear waste storage container on an old boat trailer. The chef wanted me to mention that the nuclear waste container was never used for nuclear waste – just BBQ. When Bridget and Charlie are not bbqing on their intergalactic grill they are avid beer brewers.

Duke of Ribs 2008

I have happily been blogging about this event since the very first Duke of Ribs in 2006. This year the good folks at the Union Project have cooked up an even better competition.

Some of the best in the burgh will be competing including…

  • Food 4 for the Soul – “Duke of Ribs” 2006, “People’s Choice” 2007
  • BJ’s BBQ Smoke House “Duke of Ribs” 2007,
  • Hamp’s BBQ- formally the Amateur category “Duke of Ribs” and now a proud business owner
  • Worthy Rib’s and many more local favorites!

Raffles, local celebrity judges, the sweet sounds of DJ Supa C and homemade sides including world famous greens and mac and cheese. $5 gets you three bones and it is just $1.50 per side.

Learn Coffee at The Grind

I have this event marked on my calendar but I was grabbing some lunch yesterday at the Union Project and the flyer for this event really caught my eye. The printed version of this flyer is really beautiful as the printing is in gold metallic. Anyhow here is my list of reasons why you should attend this event, in no particular order:

  • learn about coffee from some of the best people in coffee in Pittsburgh – I really don’t know what the difference between a cappuccino and a latte is (yes – I have been pretending I know, but I really don’t) and I think it is about time I find out.
  • The people from Aldo Coffee are latte art experts and they have a great blog
  • La Prima Expresso is the most amazing coffee I have ever tasted – I wasn’t a coffee drinker until I discovered La Prima and I usually drive to the strip district on the weekends just to visit La Prima.
  • All proceeds benefit the Union Project
  • Snacks! I really like snacks
  • Who knew there was a Pittsburgh Area Coffee Association – PACA – they also have a website that links to more coffee place in Pittsburgh

Summer Stew

summerstewflier.jpgThe Union Project has been running this series for a few months now. The Tuesday Stew is an evening of music and a bowl of soup for the bargain price of $5. Since it is July, they are moving the fun outside. I have heard great things about Joy Ike and Boca Chica.

July 15 – Summer Stew!

Beginning at 6 PM, come join the Union Project for Summer Stew, a special outdoor music festival in the Tuesday Stew concert series. The Union Project welcomes Joy Ike, Boca Chica, the Harlan Twins, and Sleep Experiments to the Summer Stew in Union Project’s side yard, weather permitting. Cover is five dollars and includes a cup of soup.

Pittsburgh is about the Neighborhoods – A documentary about East Liberty

Chris Ivey is a Pittsburgh based filmmaker who has traveled around the world working on documentary films. Over the past 2 years he has been working on a film about East Liberty called East of Liberty. I had a chance to see some of the raw footage when Chris started working on this and in the past year he even shown the film in London. East of Liberty is a look at the stories and the people of East Liberty who aren’t usually the ones getting the media attention around some of the current development there. The Union Project is showing the film as part of their Monday conversation series about the neighborhood. I think this is well worth attending. I am including the details below the video clip.
