Killer Joe Grushecky

killer-joe-photoThis seems to be the summer of unique Pittsburgh collaborations.  Barebones Productions is a Pittsburgh theater company that has been performing since 2003.  Barebones is back this summer and has partnered with another Pittsburgh performer – Joe Grushecky – for the production Killer Joe.

Killer Joe is a play by playwrite Tracey Letts about a family that hires a hitman to kill the matriarch for insurance money.

Joe Grushecky will be preforming live each night as part of the production.  Saturday nights production will be followed by a closing party with a performance by Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers.

Joe Grushecky is a musician from Pittsburgh who has been performing here, around the country and overseas for 30 years.  Joe Grushecky often collaborates and performs with Bruce Springsteen.  Check out this 2005 CNN article about Grushecky titled – Rock’s Best Kept Secret. Continue reading

cityLive – People that do more than talk

For over a year now, cityLIVE has been putting together interesting panel discussions and forums on all sorts of interesting topics. Check out my post about the first cityLIVE event here. Both CEOs for Cities and Return to Pittbsuburgh have posted a write up on the last cityLIVE event. The next cityLIVE event, March 12, 2009 at the New Hazlett Theater, should be equally interesting – the theme is Moved to Action – and I know first hand how inspring these panelists can be.

3 X 10 = A lot of good talk on Pittsburgh

The CityLive events series is now entering their 2nd year. For the past 12 months they have been putting together some interesting lecture/symposium/panel discussions on a monthly basis at the New Hazlette Theater.  Click here to see a picture and my write up from the first CityLive event last year.

They have covered all sorts of topics from Green Jobs to Leadership.  I think this next event is worth attending – 10 people who are doing great things in Pittsburgh will be speaking for 3 minutes each.

I have been lucky enough to have had the opportunity to talk with a few of this great list of presenters.  If I had to make a list of people that are realy doing some great things in Pittsburgh  – this would be a great place to start.  If you think Pittsburgh is boring, or you think there are no jobs here or you are just blah on the burgh – well spend a little time listening to these people talk.

Art, Activism & Equity Symposium

Thanks to Liz Perry for sending me the info about this event. I have had the good fortune to meet a number of the presenters. I am going to attend to hear Faythe Levine and Liz Perry’s presentation. I have had the opportunity to get to know Liz over the past 3 years – she is an absolute expert in blogs and new media and a great person to talk with. Liz is also one of the forces behind Pittbsurgh Signs Project (I will post more on that I promise).

Lots more info about this event is located here.

A quick list of reasons I think you should attend this event:

  • Guerrilla Girls – Liz Perry was raving about this group – it is my understanding they do all of their presentations in guerrilla suits.
  • Heather Arnet – she runs the Women and Girls Foundation and she is a great person to get to know
  • LUPEC – Ladies United for the Preservation of Endangered Cocktails – they have been improving drink knowledge around Pittsburgh for years now
