Shred Your Fears: Skateboarding Retreat for Women

Shred Your Fears is a half-day skateboarding retreat intended for women who want to overcome their fears so that they feel strong and comfortable in their bodies.

Shred Your Fears will be held from 9a-1p on Sunday, November 4 at Switch & Signal Skatepark located at 7518 Dickson Street in Swissvale.

Organized by Maya Henry, a mind-body coach, the event will feature a full beginner skateboarding lesson, yoga and group coaching sessions, unlimited coffee from Satellite Cafe (Constellation Coffee’s “satellite” location in the skatepark), as well as a full dairy-free, gluten-free brunch, and other goodies.

Intimidated by skateboarding?  Maya sure was at first, but she is growing to love the sport as she practices with her son.  Read more about how Maya got into skateboarding and check out the FAQ’s on the event page.  As of this posting, there are only 5 tickets left.

Redhawk Coffee Now Open in Oakland

For a neighborhood that is home to a population of guaranteed coffee drinkers, Oakland has 3 universities and a handful of hospitals, there has been a lack of coffee shops especially since the Pete’s Coffee closed a few years ago.

Redhawk Coffee which launched a coffee truck last year now has a storefront at 120 Meyran in Oakland. Thank you for Natrona Bottling for sharing this snapshot on Instagram.  The shop opened in January and is just a popup location through March. You can read more about Redhawk coffee’s Oakland location in the Pitt News here.

24 Gifts of Pittsburgh: Fair Trade Coffee from Building New Hope

building-new-hope-table

Building New Hope has been one of those things that has sort of been on my Pittsburgh radar, but not something I have blogged about before.  Building New Hope is a Pittsburgh non-profit organization that imports coffee beans from El Porvenir, a worker-owned coffee cooperative in Nicaragua.  The coffee is roasted locally by Coffee 19 in Washington County. Proceeds from the sale of coffee are used to fund two schools and other youth programs in Nicaragua.

Sample Building New Hope at the Fair Trade Marketplace at ECS

Pittsburgh-Fair-Trade-MarketplaceThere are so many great ways to shop local this weekend in Pittsburgh. Saturday, December 5 is the Handmade Arcade at the Convention Center. Kerf Case, #3 on our list of 24 gifts of Pittsburgh, will be there as well as OttoFinn, #1 on our list. The blog Design Crush, which covers art and design from around the world, (but is conveniently located here in Pittsburgh) has published a preview of the 2015 Handmade Arcade here.

This weekend is also the annual Fair Trade Market at ECS (ECS is short for Environmental Charter School) in Regent Square. On Saturday and Sunday you can shop their huge marketplace of fair trade gifts. Building New Hope is one of the vendors as well as several other fair trade brands. You can see a preview of some of the items that will be for sale here.
