Viewer Discretion

So I guess we should take a break from our Super Bowl fever to write something that is not football related…
Thankfully our friends at the Shadow Lounge just keep coming up with good idea – check out Viewer Discretion – an open mic but for video instead of performance. Yet another good reason to spend your evening at the Shadow Lounge – here are the details.

Viewer Discretion: Video Open Mic
also feat. Lauren Goshinski, Adam Grossi, & Josh Tonies

So we have the Curl Up Tuesdays for all the Spoken Word junkies. And Wednesdays’ Musicians’ Open Mic is probably one of the most talented open stages in the Mid-Atlantic…. So what about the Film folks?
The Shadow Lounge is proud to introduce its newest “Open Mic”, Viewer Discretion, happens on the 1st Thursday of the Month. The idea behind it: Take the Poetry Open Mic model and do it for film. Simply put bring your piece down on DVD format, sign up, and show.

The time limit is 10 minutes. It can be a short or 10 minutes of bigger picture… maybe it’s a work in progress. Each month we’ll showcase a couple of features to make sure the night it filled with moving pictures.

DonnaLisa’s Fine Coffee & Teas

with the closing of la prima espresso on liberty avenue over the summer, downtown workers were sent scattering along sidewalks searching for a decent alternative. the obvious choice was starbucks, but for those of us seeking to support local business the search was not over. luckily for me there’s a coffee connoisseur in my office and he directed me to DonnaLisa’s. Located on the first floor of the union trust building [521 grant street], DL’s is a small shop offering quality products such as fair trade and organic coffees, and all natural snacks. i can’t say i’ve tried the coffee yet [i have it on good authority that it’s well worth it], but the chai definitely hits the spot. as an added bonus, i’m paying $0.27 less there than at starbucks. plus, they offer a 15% discount to wqed members and anyone can get a punch card- 14 drinks and you get one free. a tasty deal!

good old uncle sam

you may have seen an uncle sam’s, either in oakland, squirrel hill or at the waterworks. you may have thought that it’s a chain restaurant with it’s thorough decor and teenage staff. the only thing that may have tipped you off is the fact that they only take cash. uncle sam’s is a locally owned and operated business offerring yummy subs to several parts of the city. you always get a foot-long and they offer thin fries as a side [included when dining in]. for me, a foot-long portabella sub is two meals, and for a total of $7, that’s a deal.

check out other restaurants from the same owner: fuel & fuddle and joe mama’s – both in oakland
