  • Night at the Byham

Tonight I went to see Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet at the Byham Theatre (the company does not reside Pittsburgh, but I’ll let it go.) There were numerous heart moments, so I shall consolidate:

    1) The doorman with the neat moustache and facial hair greeted me. He rocks it.
    2) I think I sat next to someone whom I knew in middle school. (If you are reading this, Person, forgive me for not saying anything. It’s just like, been a while.)
    3) The performance was inspiring, and Pittsburghers asked really great questions at the ‘talk back’ session with Mr. King afterwards.
    4) Downtown was hoppin’ after the show! The Pirates game had let out at the same time, there was a delightful throng of college kids with the cheap seats and old money crowding the streets.
    5) Later in the evening, I attended a friend’s birthday (downtown*, of course) and saw more faces I haven’t seen in over 2 years, and made some wonderful new acquaintances. Who needs Friendster when you have Pittsburgh?**
    6) I drove home listening to some wicked drum’n’bass on the late night public radio tip. (I forgot to mention in my WYEP that the music gets much more interesting after midnight.)

    * Downtown: the new Lawrenceville. Or the new Garfield. I don’t know, I can’t keep it straight.

** That said, I Heart PGH has a Friendster profile – you know you wanna get up in the action. Myspace and all that jazz coming soon.

  • Urban Hike – did you know Pittsburgh has an urban horse farm?

Yes, there is an urban horse farm and many other unusual things in this city that one would not expect to find in a city. About once a month or so, some of the folks from Ground Zero (http://www.gzpgh.org) plan a walking tour of a different city neighborhood. One does not need to leave the city limits to find some interesting things. They have covered some of the hidden neighborhoods in the city of Pittsburgh.
The hikes are free, just show up and you are guaranteed to meet a great group of people and learn alot about the neighborhood.

    The hikes are organized by:
    Sean Beasley
Kate Fink (you may recognize her from WDUQ radio)
    Mark Hoffman
    Emily Keebler

We at Iheartpgh.com have met some of these hikers and can attest that they are great people, definitly PGH lovers. To learn more about the hikers visit http://www.urbanhike.org

Saturday October 1 – Urban Hike visits Carnegie.
Meet at Eccentricities, 222 Third Avenue, 10 am, October 1st.
There should be plenty of street parking – Gas is expensive. How about these buses instead? 100, 25D

The hike will take about three hours.
As always, comfortable shoes, sunscreen and water are excellent ideas.

  • Amnesty International Film Festival

Thank you Amnesty. The Amnesty Film Festival comes back to Pittsburgh from September 7 to September 11. Fifteen films will be presented, profiling human rights struggles across the globe. Films from Cuba, Peru, Cambodia … and even Brooklyn.

I am definitely going to try to make it to some of these films. They fascinating, especially after this summer’s crappy Hollywood offerings. As much as films like this shake our senses, they also offer us hope and encouragement in trying times. We are all world citizens.

    Here’s a sample movie:

    WAR GAMES: East Coast Premiere

“In January 2003, an amazing event took place in Southern Sudan. A few miles from the front line of one of Africa’s longest and most brutal conflicts, thousands of children came together to compete in a barefoot, bootleg Olympics. War Games tells the compelling story of the realization of the Twic Olympics, following events as they unfold and providing an intimate portrait of a community devastated by war, yet still determined to make the most of every moment.”

A listing of the first week’s films are here, at the Pittsburgh City paper.
