  • Hotness – Pittsburgh’s answer to Pink

The party’s inside, so click inside!

Oh yes. It’s HOTNESS, our favorite fuschia-wearin’ silver-sequined spectacle on the Pittsburgh muzack scene. Lindsay and I became Hotness fans when we first saw him play at the Shadow Lounge last year. And we were so excited when we found that the party anthem “We Gotta!” now has a MUSIC VIDEO. (“I got a feeling / from the boredom patrol / that we gotta! / get this party started right now!”) Take that, Pink.

This March 2005 article from the City Paper explains why we love Hotness:

“At a typical show, he does most everything on the fly, often playing along to a CD of pre-recorded material, improvising lyrics and dancing clumsily as he goes. He passes out pots, pans, muffin tins and other kitchen utensils, encouraging the audience to add its own percussion; most enthusiastically comply. At a recent house show in South Oakland, the crowded basement full of twentysomethings took the notion to heart, banging on heating vents while Doggett sang his party anthem, “If You Are What You Eat, Then I Must Eat a Lot of Awesome,â€Â? which commands, “If the party’s inside, let’s go inside,â€Â? and “if the party’s in the tree, let’s get in the tree,â€Â? among other poeticisms.”

Note: “If You Are What You Eat, Then I Must Eat a Lot of Awesome” does not yet have a music video.

You can see Hotness and friend Weird Paul for FREE!! next Thursday April 27. at the Quiet Storm. They will be playing the “Be Well Healthcare Resources for the Uninsured” zine release event at 8PM.

Come to think of it, Hotness is more like Pittsburgh’s answer to Norway’s Hurra Torpedo. Now isn’t that something! We don’t have to travel to Norway to see music made with kitchen appliances!

  • We’ve Got the Look

If you want to know what Pittsburgh looks like, look no further than the Flickr group in Pittsburgh. The Flickr group in Pittsburgh has within a year taken an on-line activity to the streets. Over 350 members have posted more than 3,000 photos chronicling the people and places of Pittsburgh.

Photos vary from the pedestrian (in the very best sense of the word), to the sublime, to the fantastic. One Pittsburgh flickrite, Daniel Weeks, specializes in kite photography.

For the past few months, the Pittsburgh Flickr group has held regular gallery showings (which can get rather wound up, considering the behavior some people resort to when in front of or behind a camera). But even the more sedate, can have a good tiime at the Exposure shows. Additional activities include group visits to and from other cities, photowalks in various neighborhoods — one will take place on the South Side this weekend — and an effort to rescue and find homes for stray dogs.

The next Exposure will take place Friday, April 28, 7-10 p.m., at the z:lounge, 2108 Carson Street.

Shown below are two flickrites at the last Exposure held at the Garfield Artworks on April 7.

  • Pedal Pittsburgh

The last 3 years I have done the bicycle tour called Pedal Pittsburgh. It’s a huge event with thousands of bicyclists of every level particpating. First off, it’s not a race so don’t feel you need to be an avid cyclist to do this event. There is everything from a 15 mile ride to a 60 mile ride with rest areas and free food and drinks provided along the route(s). You’ll also get a Pedal Pittsburgh t-shirt along with some goodies. Last year I did the 25 mile ride that took me through the South Side, North Side, through Oakland and back to the South Side. It’s an incredibly scenic tour and I’ve seen parts of the city I would not normally have experienced in every day life. And let me tell you that Troy Hill seriously kicked my butt on the 25 mile tour!

After the ride you’ll be provided a very nice lunch and entertainment. If you know how to ride a bike you’ve got no excuse, so sign up today! The event is on Sunday, May 21st. You’ll also be benefiting The Community Design Center of Pittsburgh, which is a non-profit organization helping to improve the quality of life in Pittsburgh.

(Ed. note: This year Pedal Pittsburgh is Sunday, May 21. Click on the link above to register!)
