Where are all the gay ladies?

When I moved to Pittsburgh last year from a big city, I have to admit that I was a little concerned about the lesbian scene here, or lack thereof–but I was very pleasantly surprised. Despite what I saw on Queer as Folk, it is NOT all about Liberty Avenue, especially not for women. We do have a regular hangout we can head to if we want to shoot pool, grab a cold one after softball, or get sweaty on the dance floor. OK, it’s not fancy or anything, but everyone knows that they can always head dahn Donny’s when they want to socialize with other dykes. But a lot more is happening outside the local bars…

Regent Square is probably the best place in town to spot lesbians in their natural habitat. Everytime I go there to meet someone, go for a jog or walk the dogs at Frick Park, I can’t go two steps without running into another dyke. I would definitely recommend this part of town to newcomers! While you’re there, step into The Square Cafe for the tasty food and lesbian eye candy, or D’s Six Pax and Dawgs, for a cheap, loaded hotdog washed down with a cold brew from their amazing selection of beer.

And I’ve discovered that some of the best stuff for gay ladies in the Steel City are things that women have organized themselves. Like the monthly Queers! They’re What’s for Dinner gatherings hosted by Ehrrin Keenan at the Gypsy Cafe on the Southside. If you’re new to town or maybe just want to get out there and meet some fresh faces, you should email Ehrrin–she can put you on her Evite list for the dinners, and on her queers mailing list, which will update you about other happenings of lesbian interest around the ‘burgh. You’ll find out about book clubs, game nights, karaoke, singles dinners, political actions, and all kinds of local performances.

Because another thing I love about Pittsburgh are all the talented performers! Soulful local veteran Joey Murphy hosts regular queer singer/songwriter nights featuring well-known acts stopping by on national tours, as well as up-and-coming ‘burghers. Joey also hosts an open-mic night for acoustic singer/songerwiters as part of MySpace Mondays over at Moondog’s. This coming Monday night you can check out the Emmy-winning Carol Lee Espy, get up onstage yourself (there are prizes for participants), or just enjoy a cold drink and soak in the sounds. And it’s not just for the gay ladies–anyone is welcome!

I heart Pittsburgh because of all the gorgeous and talented women who make it such a great place to live. If you want to know more about the local dyke scene, email Ehrrin to get on the mailing list, check out the Pittsburgh Dykes profile on MySpace, and read the Pittsburgh Lesbian Correspondants’ newsy and political blog.

Git Aht! – Things To Do This Weekend

(Things to do while figuring out what to do with all that left over Joe-mentum.)

Friday, August 11
Posion/Cinderella, 7:30 p.m., PG Pavilion
Really, there’s not enough Aqua Net in the world to do this show justice… But try, I will. It’s a homecoming of sorts for Poison frontman Bret Michaels (nee Bret Michael Sychak), as the Butler native headlines a show of two HUGE 80s hair metal bands. Cinderella got short-changed by a lot of folks, but they’re musically one of the better bands in the whole genre (or “zhon-durr” as a former coworker of mine used to say, that always went over well in client meetings, right up there with using “irregardless” without a trace of irony). The heat index out in Burgettstown is going to jump by about 15 degrees from the Bic lighters held aloft when Poison busts out “Every Rose”, so make sure you keep hydrated. Remember, though – Every bad boy’s got a soft side, at least accoring to the commercial for “Metal Ballads” or whatever that compilation disc was called, so don’t get all judgmental if the guy next to you in his mid-30s tears up, just a little, of course… Just a little…

Pittsburgh 50 Finest Event, 6:00 p.m. Level, In Da Strip
For whatever reason, the folks over at 50 Finest keep overlooking the immeasurable contribution that Git Aht makes to Pittsburgh. I mean, dozens of people read this thing, right? And they all rely on this pile of useless information every week. Well, whatever, maybe next year… This is our “Drinking For A Cause” event for the weekend, as all proceeds benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Drinking for a cause is always A Good Thingâ„¢, and doing so at Level means you can lay down on the beds, just for a minute, no, really, I’m ok, maybe a water please, no ice. Thanks sweetheart, you’re the best. I mean that. What are you doing tomorrow, maybe we can go catch a flick dahn waterfront or something?

Saturday, August 12
Urban Hike – Oakmont, 10:00 a.m., Oakmont
Lindsay covered this yesterday, but the need to point this out is important, and saves me from writing a whole item! You think it’s easy getting up early every Friday and ripping off other sources for this information? Well, it’s not. Well, it is. Ok, whichever. The Urban Hikers take on Oakmont and they promise “a great view of the river, walk through some woods with a creepy name, hear about a mysterious bookshop, and see a frighteningly fascinating theater!” which sounds a little better suited to, say, October but it’ll be cold then. I’d rather walk in the warm. With a beer. And the sisters of the Tau Gamma sorority. Who would give me neck rubs as we walk, just out of the goodness of their hearts, ’cause they’re like that. God bless ’em, they’re good people.

Shadyside… The Art Festival On Walnut, 10:00 a.m., Shadyside (Duh!)
Not really sure why the ellipsis is there, but it’s art, right, so just, y’know… go with it. They’re promising… $15 million worth of art for sale, but that doesn’t mean you have to buy all of it. Where… ya gonna put it anyway, really? The… weather’s supposed to be good, so… head up there after your walk in… Oakmont. Y’know… all of the… ellipses kinda makes it sound like you’re doing a… Christopher Walken impression… Hah!… I got a fevah… and the only prescription… is more cowbell! And an… Arts festival on… Walnut.

Social & Ballroom Dance, 7:00 p.m., School House Yoga, Lawrenceville
Git yo cha-cha on in Larryville. Free lesson with admission, light refreshments are offered.

Sunday, August 13
Flick: Yours, Mine And Ours, Duskish, Flagstaff Hill
I dunno if this is the original, which was a charming movie with the great Henry Fonda and the amazing Lucille Ball (and a young Tim Matheson, way before he became Otter.) or the new one with… Umm… I dunno, two mostly forgettable people in a movie calculated to make money because everybody loves a good family comedy, which they probably screwed up anyway by going for the cheap, naked sentimentality than anything #@!%ing honest or genuine or from the heart and the gut AND WHY DON’T THEY JUST TRY TO DO SOMETHING ORIGINAL RATHER THAN RECYCLING THE SAME PABLUM BECAUSE IT TESTS WELL IN FOCUS #@!%ING GROUPS?!? GAH!!!!

Ah, well, it’s free, so there’s that. Have a good weekend.

Got an event planned? Would you like a whole flock of yinzers like us with disposable income to show up? Let Git Aht know by sending the electronic mail to gitaht@gmail.com.

Git Aht: Things To Do This Weekend

(Things to do while waiting for that order of black and gold face paint to come in.)

Friday, August 4
Tea Time With Accordion, 7:00 p.m., ON Gallery, Garfield
Pittsburgh Art Scene Dynamo Laurie Mancuso drops a Gallery opening in the former Horizon Space at 5505 Penn Avenue. The show features Winston-Salem-based Werehouse Art Collective pieces including paintings, drawings and grave rubbings. This wins the Git Aht Best Band Name Award this week, with music provided by “Let’s Get Real Pregnant”.

Wiz Khalifa, 7:00 p.m. Mr Smalls Funhouse, Millvale
Local Hip Hop music showcase. Wiz is the headliner, but this show is jampacked with talent including Basick Sickness, Dem Boyz Crave, Broken Wingz and more. From the Smalls Page: “ALL STAR CAST! Wiz Khalifa doin the Damn Thing!” I couldn’t have put it any better myself, so I won’t even try.

Saturday, August 5
Sing-a-Long Mary Poppins, 3:30 p.m., Byham Theater
So this is a screening of the movie, but it’s a sing-a-long version, which I think means there’ll be, I dunno, subtitles up somewhere. So it’s kinda like karaoke without the drunks. That’s probably a good thing for a family event. My singing at karaoke is something quite atrocious, and when I sing loud enough, I always sound precocious. Luckily, the crowd at Del’s is pretty forgiving. The Byham’s probably pretty much the same, except, y’know… not boozin’ it up.

Let’s Dance Pittburgh, Try-outs 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m., Finals 8:00 p.m., Station Square
Put on your red shoes (or moon boots) and dance the blues. This is hosted by MTV’s Susie Castillo, and one of the judges is Franco Harris. FRANCO HARRIS! This is an all ages event, and a dance party open to everyone will follow the competition. Sweet.

Sunday, August 6
Five Guys Named Moe, 7:00 p.m., Rhythm House Cafe
Go see all the Moe-Heads at the Cafe. These guys are approaching local legend status, and it’s always a good time. The special is still the fish parm, which, I dunno, I guess goes good with R & B. Git Aht needs to actually try the fish parm one of these days, but he just can’t bring himself to do it.

Flick: Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Duskish, Flagstaff Hill
The original appearance of Snakes On A Plane.

Snakes. Why’d it have to be snakes?

Anyway, besides being, y’know, awesome, this is the movie that gave Git Aht one of his first schoolboy crushes, ’cause Karen Allen was so cool (smart, world traveler, could drink guys under the table) and yet so hot (wielding a torch to fend off snakes while wearing heels and a dress cut above the knee). Hoo-fah.

Got an event planned? Would you like a whole flock of yinzers like us with disposable income to show up? Let Git Aht know by sending the electronic mail to gitaht@gmail.com.

Git Aht: Things To Do This Weekend

(Things to do while… Oh who am I kidding? You’re all going to St. Vincent’s this weekend anyway.)

HEY ALL! Git Aht got one o’ them electronic mail accounts, so if you have an event you’d like to let us know about send it on down the line to gitaht@gmail.com. All submissions should be in by, oh, let’s say Thursday at high noon. No promise is made that it’ll make the list, but at least we’ll know about it, and knowing is half the battle. Yo Joe!

Friday, July 28
Exposure: Pittsburgh, 7:00 p.m., Z Lounge, South Side
MarkFlickr is one of those big time Web 2.0 sites, got all kinds of cool web technology, and all the kids love it. One of the cooler aspects is the ability to create groups, where people can post up shots of whatver it is that they’re interested in. One of these groups, a quite popular one, is dedicated to Pittsburgh. Well, the last Friday of every month, they get together for a show opening, featuring a photographer that is usually from Pittsburgh. This month, Mark Knobil gets the call. Mark is a world traveler, just returned from shooting in China, a cinematographer as well, having worked with NOVA and National Geographic, and shooting just about everywhere you can think of. Git Aht likes the event because in addition to the great work presented by a fellow Pittsburgher, people drink at these things, cause, y’know, it’s at a bar. So, if your idea of a good time is to see the creative class whooping it up, this is a good place to start. Bonus Points: Mark has worked with Scott Baio. Ferreals.

Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, 8:00 p.m. City Theater, South Side
When both the critics and the composers who work with them give praise, they must be doing something right. PNME has a great pricing structure too: 20 bucks to get in, unless you’re a senior, then it’s 10, unless you’re a student, then it’s pay-what-you-can, unless you’re a first time visitor, then it’s free, unless you bring a first time visitor, then it’s 10 bucks for you and still free for your first-timer friend. If that’s the case, I’d make my friend put up 5 bucks, it’s only fair. This weekend they perform “Soldier Songs” by composer David T. Little.

Omar Abdul’s BIG FUN, 10:00 p.m., Shadow Lounge
4 DJs, 3 Bands, 2 Filmmakers, and 2 Artists. No partridge in a pear tree. Also, they promise “3 Rooms of ignorant fun”, so how could you go wrong? The event is co-sponsored by the League Of Young Voters, which is way better than the League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Get there at 9 for Flamenco. Arriba!

Saturday, July 29
Dollar Bank Jamboree, 3:00 p.m., Point State Park
What’s a Saturday in Pittsburgh without fireworks? I’ll tell ya what it is, it’s a waste of bloody time, is what it is. This thing actually kicks off at 7 in the blessed AM with a fishing tournament, but the bands don’t start until 3ish. Trisha Yearwood is the headliner, which means she plays right before the fireworks start, but local country rockers and Big Ben favorites the Povertyneck Hillbillies take the stage at 5:30.

Jam On Walnut, 7:00 p.m., Walnut Street, Shadyside
Come, children, and listen to the Spin Doctors play music on a portable stage set up next to Doc’s. Relax, drink beer, walk along the street looking at baubles displayed in store windows as you sip beer from a plastic cup. Tasty? You bet. We’re big fans of drinking, of course, but we’re even bigger fans of drinking for a cause. To have said beer, you must pay 2 dollars to get into the drinking area. (Drinking area? The whole world’s a drinking area if you’re motivated enough.) This 2 dollars goes toward the Cystc Fibrosis Foundation.

Sunday, July 30
Rusted Root, 5:30 p.m., Chevrolet Amphitheatre, Station Square
“Jam band Suvivors” and local legends return as part of their Summer tour. They do a great live show, and a homecoming should be even better, cause, y’know, their parents’ll probably be there, and you always try harder if mom’s watching.

Festival In The Park, 3:00 p.m., Flagstaff Hill
A fund-raiser for Child Relief & You which supports projects for underprivileged children in India and the United States. DJ Adam MacGregor starts spinning the Bollywood and Bhangra at 3, local band Chai Baba comes on at 6:30. If you like Inidan food, this is probably a pretty good place to get it, and economical too as meals will be available for under 10 bucks. The whole thing wraps up with…

Flick: Gandhi, 9ish, Flagstaff Hill
He fought for freedom, you watch his life story for free. This is a great movie about a great man, but this flick is long, over three hours long, so don’t, y’know, drink too much during your tailgate party beforehand. Do I have to spell this out for you?

Git Aht: Things To Do This Weekend

(Things to do while figuring out if it’s the heat or the humidity or the fact that you still won’t take off your “Drink Like A Champion Today” sweatshirt…)

Friday, July 21
Wine & Dine In The Park, 5:00 p.m., Robin ill Park, Moon
Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow you go out and do the same thing all over again, but probably not with as much quiet dignity and grace that a wine-tasting usually provides. PA wineries put out their best, local restaurants provide the food, and the singing chef Olga Watkins performs with her quartet. This is hoity, possibly toity, but definitely full of good wine. Plus, it’s out by the airport, so it won’t take long for a cab to show up to take you home when you’ve started telling people that you think it’s a “yappy little vintage that sits on the tongue asking you for your approval like a sad puppy, with a hint of clove in the after-taste and if any of you disagree we’re gonna have a tussle” about a chradonnay, and security asks you to leave.

Juggling In Afghanistan, 8:30 p.m. The Ice House, Lawrencevlle
Neon PullOk, I’m not sure that’s what it’s called, but this is a showcase for Pittsburgh Photographer Renee Rosensteel, showcasing pictures from her trip to Afghanistan. The juggling bit comes from the fact that Zany Umbrella Circus juggler Ben Sota was along for the ride, teaching juggling at a circus school. She also visited bazaars, and the Hindu Kush mountains, shooting all the way. She does restaurant-quality work, especially in the photo-journalistic style, so go show some support for the local photographers. Plus, it’s billed as a party, so there’s that. After, roll on up to Ray’s for the benefit since you’re in the nieghborhood.

Too Tall Jones, 10:00 p.m., Club Cafe
No, not Ed, Fred. Local Rock / Hardcore / Alternative at Club Cafe. They cite Queen, AC/DC and the Cult as influences, so you can’t really go wrong here, unless you really don’t like Queen, AC/DC and the Cult. Which is just silly.

Saturday, July 22
The Fourth Annual North Side Celebration in the Park, 11:00 a.m., Allegheny Commons Park
Puppets! Run! They’ll kill you as soon as look at you!

Wait, hang on a sec… That’s clowns, right? Yeah… clowns. Puppets are ok. There’s a lot going on here, fun for the whole family and such-like, so let’s hit it up bullet-style:

  • – Band Performances
  • – Children Interactive Activities
  • – Trackless Train Rides (Which is better than Trainless Track rides, I’m thinking)
  • – Face Painting
  • – Puppetmaking
  • – 3-on-3 Basketball Tournaments
  • – Senior Wellness Programming sponsored by AGH
  • – Allegheny Center Alliance Church Flea Market
  • – Speciality Item Vendors
  • – Kid’s Karaoke
    – The inevitable “much more”

The Pittsburgh Ring Cycle, 3:00 and 8:00 p.m., The Byham
No, not the Japanese horror flick, and no, this has no Hobbits. This is Der Ring des Nibelungen, which, tranlsated roughly means “takes like, 4 days to watch”. You’ll recognize “Ride of the Valkyries” at the three o’clock show as the music that Duvall blasts from the helicopters in Apocalypse Now, but refrain from shouting “Charlie Don’t Surf!” if you can. The eight o’clocker is Siegfried, with no Roy in sight.

Dixie Chicks, 7:30 p.m., Mellon Arena
Natalie, darlin’… Call me. I’ll pick you up in the truck, we’ll go down to the Stew Ball, have a couple longnecks, shoot some pool, play a tune or two by Slim Chance and the Can’t Hardly Playboys on the juke box. At some point, I’ll say Yee-ha. Trust me on that, sweetheart. Hoo-ee, I love me some good geetar playin’ and fiddlin’, and this show should have it.

Sunday, July 23
Bach, Beethoven & Brunch, 10:30 a.m., Mellon Park
This week, they’re featuring the Renaissance City Winds, and of course, brunch. But the important thing here is they’ve got prizes. That’s all you really need to know about this one. It’s got prizes. At a brunch. With classical music. Prizes.

Pittsburgh Blues Festival, Noon., Hartwood Acres
This benefits the greater Pittburgh Community Food Bank, and the lineup is good all weekend, but it seems especially so today, with Lee Rocker, The Yardbirds, and John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. Plus, there’ll be whole raft of local artists too. Go, listen, order four fried chickens and a coke. Or some dry white toast. Whichever.

Flick: Ice Age 2, 9ish, Flagstaff Hill
Because there were so many unanswered questions from the first one, that’s why. Oh yeah, this is really important here: FREE! FREE! FREE!
