You belong at the Union Project for the “You Deserve It” Happy Hour

Usually the Union Project is all about the community. But this Thursday the Unioon Project is about you, well you helping the Union Project help the community. On Thursday, Dec. 14th the Union Project is hosting the 3rd event this Holiday season and this event is all about fun.

You should join the folks from the Union Project (and me) for an evening of fun times to support the Union Project.

There will be a silent auction with some amazing items. Don’t know what to get for your parents? Stop by the Union Project to bid on:

-Dinner and a tour of Braddock with the Mayor of Braddock, John Fetterman

    -Two Quantum Theatre ticket vouchers

    -East End Gift Basket

-A Family Membership to the Carnegie Museums

-Haircut and styling for two by local famous stylist

With music provided by the amazing DJ Omar-Abdul this is definitly going to be a great way to celebrate the holidays.

I think the Union Project is one of the best things to happen to Pittsburgh. I didn’t know I needed a community center/meeting space/amazing cafe (you can see my previous posts on how much I love the Union Project and the cafe). until the Union Project opened. Now, I don’t know how I could live with out it.

Git Aht! – Things To Do This Weekend

(Things to do while… Holy crap, I think Willie’s still running…)

Friday, December 8
Modey Lemon DJ Night, 10:00 p.m., Brillobox, Upper Larryville
The Modey Lemon spin tunes rather than play them, and I’m guessing it’ll be a blast. I’m gonna try to make this, but this would be a fourth straight night at Brillo, (Tues: fund-raiser, Weds: pub quiz, Thur: meet-for-drinks-with-a-lovely-young-lady) and I’m just not cool enough to do that. I mean, there was a time, sure, when I could’ve pulled it off, but I’m too old now. I simply don’t have enough ironic t-shirts.

Pittsburgh Party For A Purpose, 10:00 p.m., Shadow Lounge, ‘Sliberty
Or as we like to call it, “Drinking For A Cause”. Shadow Lounge comes strong with a line-up including DJ High Top Wrangler (Soul/Funk), DoubleShot (a cappella), & DJ SMI (Hip hop, reggae, anything).

Anything? Awesome. Mix Garth Brooks into Tibetan Throat Singers into Lily Allen and then back into Gregorian Chants, dropping a breakbeat sample in between over dialogue from Star Wars and the sound of ducks quacking. $5 minimum donation, but 100% of it benefits the Greater Pittsburgh Nonprofit Center. Suh-weet.

Saturday, December 9
Tuba Christmas, 1:00 p.m., Century III Mall
An all-tuba orchestra playing Holiday music.

That’s probably all I need to say, because an all-tuba anything is so absurd as to be wonderful and tubas playing Christmas Carols (Silent Night? F*ck yeah!), but fine, quibbler, here are some details:

“Proceeds benefit the Harvey Phillips Foundation, which is dedicated to developing, expanding, and preserving the music arts. There will be a rehearsal at 10:00 a.m. at nearby West Mifflin Middle School. For more information, call Barbara Sabo at (412) 882-2114.”

See if they’ll play selections from next Summer’s musical tribute to Shakespeare entitled “Tuba Or Not Tuba.”

Santarchy, 2:00 p.m., Sahsside Works
santarchyDress up as Santa and go on a bar crawl/culture jam/prank. This is brought to you by the fine folks at the Pittsburgh Cacophony Society, them what brung ya the Department Store Dance Party, the Giant Squirt Gun Battle, and the Quiet Riot: Mime Bar Crawl. So, y’know… they’re fun.

Go unleash your inner Bad Santa and hit ’em up fun-style.

Stuff Your Stocking On The South Side, 11:00 a.m., East Carson Street, Sahsside
And we’ve got a winner for our “Best Double Entendre Of The Holiday Season”.

Sunday, December 10
Skating With Santa, 1:30 p.m., Schenley Rink
Hey! Santa! Shouldn’t you be working? Don’t you have like, a ton of shit to make in the next couple weeks? And here you are, skating… This is like a bookie skiving off the first week of football season. Get to work Jolly Boy!

A Musical Christmas Carol, 2:00., Byham Theater, Dahntahn
scroogedNo, it doesn’t actually have Bill Murray in it, but it should. I mean, all versions of Christmas Carol should have Bill Murray.

Actually, maybe all performances of everything should have Murray. Like, I think Streetcar would be good with Murray as Stanley. And Blanche. Like, use computers or something so he can play all the roles.

Well, ok, whatever you think of Murray’s acting ability, the CLO’s production should be a good one, and seeing some version of “A Christmas Carol” is tradition every year, although my favorite tradition is watching Ralphie nearly shoot his eye out. And drinking. Well, ok, just drinking.

Damiera & Endless Mike & The Beagle Club

There’s this really awesome band named Damiera coming to town- I saw them at the Butler VFW a couple of months ago. They’re playing at the Roboto Project on Saturday, December 16th. They’re also playing with Endless Mike & The Beagle Club. Endless Mike is an awesome band that has unified the Pittsburgh and Johnstown music scenes and as one person said, “My grandma even likes them!” . I suggest going- I’ll be there and we can say hi or pretend we don’t know eachother- whichever one floats your boat! It’s only 6 dollars (seriously, that’s like, one drink at most bars) and it starts at 7 pm. To see all shows booked by independent promoters check this out: http://www.myspace.com/pittshows

Git Aht! – Things To Do This Weekend

(Things to do while preparing your ball for it’s big night…)

Friday, December 1
Exposure: Pittsburgh, 7:00 p.m., Cub Havana, Shadyside
The monthly photography show opening run by the Pittsburgh chapter of photo-sharing web site flickr shows us the work of local amateur photographer and professional social worker Todd Hrcywoin Hrwkowian Mellencamp Hryckowian. Even though he’s got a last name like line 6 of an eye chart, Todd’s work is a treat, he finds things that some of us may never even get the chance to see. His job sometimes takes him into parts of town that…

Hmmm… Well, parts of town that aren’t necessarily the garden spots, parts of town where you could end up with a bad case of lead poisoning, and that lead gets into your system at a high rate of speed indeed.

This is not an indictment of any neighborhoods that don’t exist under a different name in any other city in the world, some of them worse, some of them better. The thing is, they’re there, and they have kids in them, and those kids sometimes get into trouble, sometimes on their own, sometimes through no fault of their own, and Todd is one of the selfless people that goes in to do something about it. It’s admirable and altruistic.

And these neighborhoods sometimes have incredible scenes, incredible things painted on walls, incredible denizens who are willing to pose for Todd, and snap he does, for our benefit.

So ok, enough of that. Let me just also point out that the openings are usually pretty well attended, filled top to bottom and side to side with good techno and trance music, and lots of beer and booze. And hell, that little part of Ellsworth has a bunch of bars, so you can do your own mini-bar-crawl and never have to go more than, say hundred feet or so.

Art Opening: Tria Prima, 7:00 p.m., 5151 Penn Gallery, Friendship-ish
Painter Fabrizio Gerbino gets shown at 5151 for te next month or so, and tonight’s opening reception means what? Say it with me, just like we’re on some twisted, evil version of Romper Room: “Food/Beverages provided”.

Yeah, you know what that means, and yeah, you could just show up for the booze ‘n eats, but Gerbino’s work has been hailed as “poignant, sad and not a little beautiful,” which is kinda like that girl you dated in college who wore black all the time and just a little too much eyeliner. Not quite enough to be a goth, but within emo’ing distance of it. Anyway, the sample of Gerbno’s work that I have seen promises a good show, and I’d say check this out..

Saturday, December 2
Craft Factory, 10:00 a.m., Mattress Factory, North Shore Side
Lindsay dropped a dime on this the other day, but it’s cool so I’m re-dropping it. Handmade crafts, one-of-a-kind items, Jewelry, clothing, books and the proverbial “and more”. They’ll have hands-on activites, and when you’re done with your shopping, you can wrap your own gifts at their wrapping and stamping station. It’s perfect for the holiday season, if that’s your kind of thing. Personally, I’m getting everybody gift cards from Giant Eagle so I can rack up the bonus gas.

Because I’m cheap, that’s why. Or thirfty. No, cheap’s the right word.

Sunday, December 3
Steelers Breakdance Party/Movie Filming, Pre-Game, Gold Lot 1, Heinz Field
Yeah, all right, here’s the headline (all caps theirs):

FIX THE STEELER SEASON WITH A BREAKDANCE PARTY WITH PRIZES!

At this point, sure, why not? To quote the General with the southern accent at the end of WarGames, “I’d piss on a spark plug if I thought it’d do any good!”

No, I’m not sure what it means either, but it sounds really cool coming from Barry Corbin.

Trans Siberian Orchestra, 3:00 and 7:30 p.m., Mellon Civic Arena, Uptahn
Personally, I think they should bring the house with them on tour.

Oh, and say Hi to my mom if you see her because she’ll be there. She loves people from Siberia*.

(*Yes, I know.)
