Tree Pittsburgh Presents Arbor Aid 2011

Arbor Aid is an annual fundraiser for Tree Pittsburgh, an environmental non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the City’s vitality by restoring and protecting City trees.  This fundraiser has grown over the years into one of Fall’s more fun and unqiue events.  Art made from salvaged wood is exhibited, food and drink is plentiful, and entertainment this year is provided by Pairdown, and the Armadillos.  And the folks at Tree Pittsburgh know that to make it a true Pittsburgh celebration you need to include an epic Cookie Table … and a Hug a Tree Photo Booth.  So strap on your dancing shoes and head over to Guardian Storage Solutions this Friday, October 28th at 9pm.

Spillapalooza

SpillapaloozaHave you ever thought to yourself, “Gee, if only there was a way I could combine my love of Zumba, empty swimming pools and marine wildlife into one amazing event!”?  Well, the good folks in Lawrenceville have figured it out for you.  That’s right, its SPILLAPALOOZA, a grassroots benefit for oil spill victims being held this Saturday from 12:30 -7pm at Leslie Park Pool (46th and Butler Streets)!  The event will feature a Zumbathon in the pool and loads of music, dancing and festivities.  Zumba dancers show up at 12 for registration!  Cost is $10 to participate in Zumbathon or $10 for entry to the festival.  All proceeds will benefit the Gulf Restoration Network.  For more info read all about it in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette!

WYEP Holiday Hootenannny this Thursday!

Hootenanny: a thingamajig

Hootenanny: a thingamajig

I started out with a lot of clever openings to this post … and then I decided to look up the exact definition of ‘hootenanny.’  The first definition is exactly what you envision, (n.) “a social gathering or informal concert featuring folk singing and, sometimes, dancing.”  However, an older use of the word hootenanny is in fact a ‘thingumbob.’  If I was going to a thingumbob on Thursday night I figured I should find out what it was.  And there it was… the definition of thingamabob, according to Dictionary.com was thingamajig!  All confusion cleared up, I emailed a couple of friends to see if they wanted to attend a thingamajig on Thursday night where members of some of the best local bands would be performing holiday music at the Pittsburgh Opera (2425 Liberty Ave.) as Silver & Gold.  The event starts at 6:30PM – music at 7PM – tickets are $5 suggested donation along with a canned good for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, and, sometimes, dancing.  I’ll see you at the thingamajig on Thursday.
