    • 55-Hours-in-Mexico-05-JSchusler-MLowe-55 Hours In Mexico – Fly to Veracruz on a Friday, rent a car, climb the third-highest peak in North America, ski down and return to your desk Monday. How hard could it be?
    • The Last Dragons – An intimate glimpse at North America’s Eastern Hellbender, an ancient salamander as mythical as it is real. And in many waters, myths are all that remain of these sentinel stream-dwellers.
    • Darklight – In 2014, the award winning film Afterglow followed skiers down impossibly lit, virgin powder slopes in the dead of night. Get ready for the sequel, this time on two wheels.

    • Reel Rock 10: A Line Across the Sky – Long considered impossible, coveted by many and attempted by a few, the Fitz Traverse has fueled the imaginations of climbers in Patagonia for decades. Tracing the iconic skyline of Cerro Fitz Roy and its six satellite peaks, it spans four miles and 13,000 feet across snow and ice-covered rock, with epic route finding and endless rappelling. Seizing their chance during a rare extended weather window, Tommy Caldwell and Alex Honnold went big. The pair completed the first ascent in a five-day push during February 2014.
    • 15-MINUTE INTERMISSION
    • Kroger’s Canteen – In 2014, Kilian Jornet won the Hardrock 100 mile race through the San Juan’s of Colorado. Along the way he stopped at Kroger’s Canteen – an aid station perched on a tiny ledge, 13,100ft above sea level. This is a story about that aid station, about the people who make it happen, and about the spirit one can only find at the Hardrock 100.
    • Bluehue – Natasha Brooks swims naked year-round in the cold mountain lakes of Snowdonia, Wales. Through this she finds solitude, grounding and a deep connection to the natural environment. Winner of the British Mountaineering Council’s 2014 Women in Adventure Film Competition.
    • Chasing Niagara – When pro kayaker Rafa Ortiz decides to paddle over Niagara Falls, he sets in motion a series of events leading his team on a remarkable two-year journey from Mexican rainforest rivers to the waterfalls of the U.S. Northwest before coming to a heart-stopping climax at the iconic falls.
    • Paradise Waits – How do you celebrate winter when snow finally falls? Freeskier Tim Durtschi takes tram laps at Jackson Hole and big mountain skier Angel Collinson rips up some Alaskan lines.

  • The Outdoors Inside

To support the outdoors, I am suggesting you head inside for the Banff Mountain Film Festival. Venture Outdoors, an amazing organization that exists to make it easier for Pittsburghers to do things outdoors is responsible for bringing the Banff Mountain Film Festival here to Pittsburgh. This is big, this is huge!!! Even if you aren’t a lover of the outdoors, you will appreciate this film festival. So if you love the outdoors, or if you are a film lover who loves being indoors this is the perfect event for you.

I have been watching and loving ski films, back in the day family vacations were about skiing and then when we had skiied enough or I was too sunburned to ski any more (WEAR SUNSCREEN!!!) we would sit inside and watch films of people doing amazing things on skis. When I moved back to Pittsburgh I realized that Pittsburgh doesn’t make it on to many of the ski film tours.

I had heard about this Banff Festival, probably from my friend Sheerin, who I am sure is skiing in France as I write this. So thankfully the folks at Venture Outdoors have been bringing the Banff Film Festival to Pittsburgh. And because Pittsburgh is awesome, it has even sold out in years past. I attended the film festival 2 years ago and I know I tried to attend last year. It is way more than just ski movies. I normally would not sit down watch a movie with subtitles about mountain climbing. But I saw an excellent film about some guys that climbed a mountain using climbing equipment that was 100 years old. Once again – Venture Outdoors helping me to try new things.

The Banff Center is a “globally respected arts, cultural, and educational institution and conference facility” located in Alberta, Canada. Each year they assemble a massive mountain film festival which then goes on a world tour around the globe bringing amazing films, these are films that cannot be found on Netflix, to outdoor lovers and film lovers in places like Pittsburgh.

The Banff Film Festival will be here for 2 nights this week, Thursday and Friday, with different films each evening. You can find a complete schedule and details at http://www.ventureoutdoors.org/banfffilmfest.asp

I really can’t say enough about Venture Outdoors. Not only are they an organization dedicated to getting Pittsburgh to spending more time outside, but they are a great group of people. I personally owe a lot to venture outdoors because one of my favorite jobs of the past few years was a result of a meeting at a brunch and hike for Venture Outdoors. But I will go on and on about Venture Outdoors another time.

  • Rebel Rebel Float Trip: the Whiskey Rebellion w/ a Bowie Twist

Embark on a guided float trip that is wacky and irreverent while paying tribute to the 1790s Whiskey Rebellion. We’ll tell the story of this historically significant rebellion in entirely new way – by hearkening the voice of David Bowie. Why Bowie? We believe that a spirit of rebellion–revolution even–threaded the experiences of the rebels and David Bowie (albeit nearly 200 years removed). We’ll use music and interpreters in such a way that you won’t possibly forget what the Whiskey Rebellion meant to both the region and a young nation.

    WHAT’S INCLUDED?
-A 4.5 mile guided kayaking trip on the Monongahela River with the story of rebellion unfolding along the route
-Single and tandem kayaks for those who need them
-An exclusive yet rustic riverfront period supper
-2 cocktails courtesy of Wigle Whiskey
    -Whiskey sampling
-A whole lot of David Bowie tunes and covers

    EVENT DETAILS
This most rebellious experience will be held on the Mon River between Webster and Monongahela, about 50 minutes outside of Pittsburgh. This is a 21 and over event with a rain date scheduled for August 6.

The experience will be limited to 25 guests with ticket prices beginning at $75. This price includes dinner, drinks, the guided trip, and entertainment. Tickets are now on sale. See “ticket information” near the top of this page for the link.

    EVENT PARTNERS
The Rebel Rebel Float Trip is an event of the Mon River Town Program in partnership with Venture Outdoors and with support by National Road Heritage Corridor, Wigle Whiskey, and Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds & Rivers.
