PUMPtoberfest – Celebrate 15 Years of PUMP

September 22, 2010 Lindsay

One of the many organizations that does good things in Pittsburgh is PUMP.  PUMP stands for Pittsburgh Urban Magnet Project and was founded 15 years ago when a grad student wrote a letter to the editor of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. What started as a group of volunteers looking to connect more young people to Pittsburgh has grown over the past 15 years into its own non profit organization with 4 staff members and many different events through out the year.  PUMP’s annual 40 Under 40 turns 10 this year as well.

Networking and Sports. You have probably seen someone walking around Pittsburgh in a bright colored PSL t-shirt. What you might not know that PUMP is the organization responsible for running the Pittsburgh Sports League (PSL) – each season thousands – yes thousands of people participate in PSL sports leagues. The PSL offers sports for everyone with leagues from bowling to volleyball. Teams and individuals sign up for weekly competitions.

PUMP’s sports leagues are a huge asset to this city – the sports leagues are a great way for new residents to meet other people and to check out other parts of the city.  The PSL uses fields, recreations spaces and bars in every corner of the city.

PUMPtoberfest is a giant celebration of 15 years of PUMP on October 2 @ the Pittsburgh Opera in the Strip District.

All ticket prices include an annual membership to PUMP and entrance to the event.

Since PUMP is all about connecting Pittsburgh people – check out the PUMPtoberfest sponsor – The Dog Stop – which is a new business opened by a Pittsburgh native who recently moved back to Pittsburgh.  The Dog Stop is located on Washington Boulevard and offers boarding and an indoor play space for dogs.  If you are interested in becoming a sponsor for PUMPtoberfest more info is available here.
