Art All Night in Lawrenceville

09poster.jpg Attending Art All Night in Lawrenceville this weekend is a must … but have you ever thought of volunteering?  The group has, in my opinion, one of the most user friendly volunteer sign-ups(http://www.artallnight.org/vols.html).  There are a whole slew of options with varying commitment time periods.

Here is the Post-Gazette write-up:
“Art All Night Lawrenceville” returns for its 12th annual no-holds barred event, from 6 p.m. Saturday to 2 p.m. Sunday at the brand new Red Warehouse, 3510 Smallman St. Professional and amateur artists may exhibit and sell any work of art, or sign up to perform, at artallnight.org. No fee, no jury, no censorship; but, this year, the art must not be wet and cannot leave a mark on the freshly rehabbed building.”

While this author is disappointed she cannot submit her slime ball installation, she supposes it is a small price to pay for 20 hours of art, music, performance, food, drink, and friends.

3rd Annual Friends of Dormont Pool Pub Tour

Dormont PoolImage via Wikipedia

Dormont is a neighborhood that is just south of Pittsburgh and it is home to an enormous, amazing and historic  swimming pool which is supported by a community with a huge heart that has been working like crazy to keep the pool afloat (I couldn’t resist).

Friends of Dormont Pool will be hosting their 3rd Annual Pub Tour this weekend

When: Saturday, April 25th, 2009 from 7:00 PM – 12:00 Midnight
Where: Local venues in Dormont.

We’re anticipating all 12 venues will participate this year!
Cost: T-shirts will be sold to support the Dormont Pool at a cost of $15.00

Check out the pool history…

The Dormont Pool dates back to 1920, when Andrew Philp used rocks to dam a creek to make a wading pool. In 1922, the borough spent $6,851 to create a larger dam for a swimming area and an ice skating rink. At the same time they also built a small wooden bath house. The pool was made to give people the feeling of being in the tropics.

Dormont Pool has survived the Great Depression, World War II, and has opened every season. It was declared a Historic Landmark in 2002.

Dormont Pool is #97 on the Pittsburgh Bucket List – what is on your Pittsburgh bucket list?

Live from East Liberty … its the Waffle Shop

I wanted to make sure to post about this before the spring semester ends.  I have made a few visits to the Waffle Shop in the past few months.

The Waffle Shop is a class project for the undergraduate art course – The Storefront Project which is taught at Carnegie Mellon.  Last semester it was Waffle Shop – a reality tv show.  For the spring semester it is Waffle Shop – The Talk Show.  The venue, which is the former tuxedo shop located at the corner of Highland and Baum in East Liberty has seen quite a transformation this semester.   The professor who was serving up waffles when I was there recently said there are more design students in the class this semester.

I think this project has been great for the neighborhood – what was once a vacant storefront is now filled with a range of people – CMU students, waffle seekers like me and even some high school students from the neighborhood.

The talk show aspect makes this more than just a place to eat waffles but a place to start a community conversation.  I am not sure what will happen to the shop over the summer – but I do hope that this project will continue in the fall – or someone will make this a real waffle shop. Hilltop Urban Hike – Saturday April 25

urban hike, 7-15-06Image by michael and anna via Flickr

Woo Hoo! Spring has sprung and the urban hike folks are back with their first hike of 2009.  This is one of my favorite PGH activities – totally laid back group – you don’t need to be a hiking expert.  I am looking forward to checking out Allentown, Beltzhoover and Knoxville neighborhoods – I may even bring along the dog to enjoy the nice weather on Satruday.

Spring cleaning?! You can do that later. Take a hike with us instead!
Urban Hike is kicking off its 2009 season with a walk on the Hilltop. We’ll see parts of Allentown, Beltzhoover, Knoxville and that enigmatic area called Mt. Oliver (is it a neighborhood? A borough? A province? A state of mind?). Join us April 25th at 11 am under the clock at the intersection of Brownsville Road and Amanda Avenue. Free parking is available on Amanda and several other side streets. The hike should last about three hours; you’re welcome to join us afterwards for lunch at a local restaurant.

Since we’re starting a new season, now might be a good time to answer some FAQs:
What does it cost? Nothing! Awesome, right?
When do I have to RSVP? You don’t! Wow!
Can I bring my dog? Only if he/she can take a bunch of strangers calling him/her the cutest dog in the universe, yes you are! Oh, and sometimes on our hikes we stop at places that might not be dog-friendly. But we usually don’t stop for long.
Other questions? E-mail info@urbanhike.org.

If you want to RSVP here is the Hilltop Urban Hike on Facebook. Continue reading

Carp All Night

I can’t believe that we at  IheartPGH have not posted on this important annual event before. Thanks to the folks at Venture Outdoors for reminding me that this weekend is Carp All Night, which is a sister event to Art All Night.  Join some fishermen and fisherwomen for an all night carp fishing extravaganza.

The umpteenth annual Carp All Night takes place this Saturday, April 25, in Lawrenceville, beneath the 40th Street Bridge. Fishing equipment will be on hand for those in need of it, as well as actual expertise in how to catch something. And we do actually catch some pretty impressive fish, including a very nice 3 lb. smallmouth bass.

No kidding. Plus lots of catfish and even the occasional carp. Don’t forget your PA Fishing License, you can get that on-line these days:http://www.fish.state.pa.us/license.htm

Stop down any time, Dusk to Dawn.

Check out some Carp All Night photos from 2006 on FlickrPittsburgh Dish also wrote about Carp All Night in 2007.
