Pittsburgh Native and Champion Whistler to Perform with Edgewood Symphony on Sat

You should go to see the Edgewood Symphony Orchestra this weekend to see one of the champions of the Pittsburgh region perform. Sean Lomax who is originally from Braddock but now travels extensively as a whistler. Sean Lomax is a champion whistler he performs with Cirque du Soleil and was named male entertainer of the year for 2009 by the International Whistling Convention.

Mr. Lomax will join the Edgewood Symphony Orchestra on Saturday night…

Mr. Lomax, 49, of Braddock isn’t a singer and won’t be playing an instrument. Instead, he will perform three classical numbers using a skill he describes as “a lost art” — whistling.

Kid Friendly Event – Celebrate Moms, Kids Books and Local Book Sellers

Thanks to @suzigurl for sending us the link to this event. It is kind of a cool story that started with a Tweet back in Decemeber – a group of people organized some events in New England to celebrate authors of kids books.  So a group of Pittsburghers are working to bring the events to town in time for Mother’s Day – Mothers Love Kids Books.  This weekend there will be a number of authors reading their books at local book stores.  A great way to spend some time with Mom and support local book stores.

East End Microbrewery Hike

East End Brewing Company during growler hours,...Image via Wikipedia

Since the playoff game is on Friday night and hopefully Sunday – Saturday afternoon is free this weekend.  A great afternoon to combine some exercise with beer.  Check out the Venture Outdoors mircobrewery hike.

We’ll start this activity with an easy hike through Frick Park to get our bodies moving. Afterward, we’ll head over to Pittsburgh’s East End Brewing Company. Owner Scott Smith will be on hand to share the intricacies of craft brewing on a private tour of the brewery and give a taste of his latest brews. As a special bonus on this outing, you take home a half gallon “growler” of fresh beer straight from the source! Minimum age 21.

Rhyme Calesthenics 6 – The Wheel of Hip Hop

UPDATE – This event is May 15 – NOT May 8 – my error – I was so excited for Rhyme Cal – I didn’t want to wait a week.

This event comes highly reccomended to me by a number of IheartPGH readers.

Rhyme Calisthenics is an MC competition that combines the intensity of a rap battle with the excitement and unpredictability of a game show. While rap battles only require one skill – the ability to diss one’s opponent – Rhyme Calisthenics is the true test of an MC’s versatility, creativity and swagger.

They even have a fan who drove in from Ohio to check out Rhyme Cal last fall.
