Looking for Auction Items for the Union Project Annual Holiday Fundraiser

Author:
Post Date:

Union ProjectImage via WikipediaSo today seems to be a day of blogging about business. I did some reading about business books this morning so I guess business is on the brain.

One of the places in Pittsburgh that I think is pretty special and that you have seen me write about often is the Union Project in East Liberty/Highland Park. One of the reasons to love Pittsburgh is the great neighborhoods and the sense of community that pulses through this city. The Union Project is a community center that works on a number of different levels to create and support the community around it. I honestly didn’t know that we needed a community center on the corner of Stanton and Negley Avenues, but now I am not sure what we would do with out it. In addition rehabilitating a beautiful historic structure to a functional space for a coffee shop, meeting space, office space and a great hall; the Union Project has worked to provide many resources to the community around it. I am most impressed with the Youth Barista Training Program that works to provide intensive job training for at-risk youth.

Saturday November 22, 2008 is the Union Project’s Annual Fundraiser and Auction - Unwrapped. The Union Project is looking for donations for the auction. If you are a business owner or know a business owner who would be willing to donate something - to the auction please let me know info-at-IheartPGH.com. This is a great way to support the Union Project and to get your businesses name in front of an audience of community minded people. No donation is too small, last year they combined smaller donations into some great gift baskets that were a big hit with the bidders.

Some of the groups sponsoring the event include:

This is going to be a great event, for a great cause. I hope you will consider attending on November 22.

Running in A Red Dress

Author:
Post Date:
Jul.24.08

The Hash Hound Harriers, Pittsburgh’s Drinking Club with a Running Problem are back in RED.  Friday, July 25th, 2008 is their Red Dress Run.  Yep they will be running around town in red dresses - Men and Women, in red dresses.   Check out my post on one of their past runs for a definition of a hash run .

Friday July 25th at 6:30pm
Gene’s Last Chance (in the Strip)
2533 Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15222
Donation to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society - $11
Bring money for trail. Start shopping for your red dresses if you dont have any yet.

For you virgin red dressers:
1. Everyone wears a red dress - men and women.
b. Some do the minimal - wearing red shirts and pants/shorts - pansies!
iii. Some go all out - men in drag and women in prom dresses. - Sexxy sexxy!!!

Then we do a hash in our red dresses. That means we follow a trail of flour, and drink alcoholic beverages.

Rare Opportunity to Check Out My Favorite Dining Establishment

Succor Soiree
Monday, March 10, 5:30-7:30pm at Enrico’s, 2022 Penn Ave., Strip District
$15/person to benefit the Union Project

I know this is last minute notice but I wanted to share this invitation with Pittsburgh. On Monday night there is a little event to benefit the Union Project (which is one of my favorite places/organizations in Pittsburgh) at the Enrico Biscotti Company in the strip district - which is probably my most favorite place to dine in Pittsburgh. Enrico’s Cafe is a tiny little hidden cafe behind the biscotti shop on Penn Ave that has an amazing atmosphere, delicious food, open kitchen.

The cafe is usually only open for lunch, but on Monday they will be open for this special event. The event is only $15 and everything goes to support the Union Project. I will be there - I hope you will consider stopping by for a great event.

Another fun fact about the Enrico Biscotti Company is that it was the setting for the film The Bread My Sweet - which starred Scott Baio and was filmed at the biscotti co in 2001. The film was released on video under the title A Wedding for Bella. You can read my blog post about the film here.

If you can RSVP to hilary@unionproject.org if not please just show up!

JOIN THE WHISKEY REBELLION II!

Author:
Post Date:
Feb.07.08

This just in from our friends at Harris Grill (and yes they are rebuilding and will reopen).  I think few people realize that the original whiskey rebellion started right here in Western, PA (check out the entire history here).  I don’t usually post political things on this website, however the people organizing this event are some big Pittsburgh lovers.  I have great respect for many of the businesses hosting this event, they are local businesses that continue to donate their time, energy and money to many organizations in the Pittsburgh area.

Celebrate Unity Night & Roll Back The Tax!

What Is It? A Celebration & a Fundraiser to Help Friends Against Counterproductive Taxation (FACT) Continue the Fight to Repeal the Allegheny County Drink Tax.

Where Is It? Church Brew Works, 3525 Liberty Avenue, Lawrenceville, (412) 688-8200

A silent auction of great gift baskets will be a part of the evenings activities. Event proceeds are used to finance activities seeking the repeal of the 10% County Drink Tax.

JOIN THE WHISKEY REBELLION II!

In 1794, the people of Western Pennsylvania banded together to fight against an unfair and counterproductive tax on whiskey. In 2008, farsighted voting Americans in Allegheny County have united to demand the repeal of the unfair and counterproductive 10% Drink Tax. Friends Against Counterproductive Taxation (FACT) has been on the forefront of the fight against this tax, and has to date spent hundred of hours and thousands of dollars opposing the Drink Tax. While the Drink Tax has been passed into law, FACT continues the fight to repeal the tax in the courts and through the political process. This is the Kick off Party for Whiskey Rebellion II, and like those citizens of long ago, FACT and its members and allies will not quit and will not go away until the political leaders of Allegheny County listen to their voices!
