Chojnowski has been burning images into wood and paper as a means of drawing for nearly two decades. During that time he has continued to refine and at the same time experiment within this unpredictable undertaking. Using propane torches, he burns, scorches, and re-burns, sometimes sands and scratches the surface of paper or wood trying to coax from it simple images.
NIGHT/LIGHT includes examples of two ongoing series of works:Nocturnes and Narratives. The Nocturnes are inspired by walking after dark in the light filled streets of American cities like Boston, New York and Pittsburgh. His intent with this series has always been to capture a memory, a fleeting moment of what he saw from the corner of his eye. Visually, his subject is light: taxi headlights reflecting off wet pavement, glowing shop windows and dazzling neon or looking down at busy streets from a hotel window.
