Friday, March 1: The Mr. Roboto Project, an all-ages art and music space, hosts the fifth annual Fun-A-Day Pittsburgh exhibition for a one-night-only event. Fun-A-Day Pittsburgh builds on the Artclash Collective’s annual tradition (9 years strong) of organizing Fun-A-Day shows in Philadelphia. This year, there will be 20 shows around the US and 5 international shows, all organized by local artists and art groups who have adopted the project and started their own shows.
Fun-A-Day is a simple concept that produces beautiful results. Participants choose a project and commit to working on their project every day for the entire month of January. The resulting works (sometimes one large piece, sometimes 31 individual pieces) create a narrative outlining each artist’s journey through the first month of the year. Projects vary from lighthearted to serious, high-brow to low-brow. This year’s list of mediums includes photos, drawings, paintings, comics, dioramas, songs, buttons, pillows, quilts, videos, and more. This year, there are several collaborative projects as well, including a list of prompts that all the members of the group project used for photo inspiration each day. Expect the gallery to be jam-packed with art!
Fun-A-Day seeks to remove the barriers to creativity by offering opportunities and invitations for participation. The project seeks to create a welcoming forum for people to share what they do, to strengthen existing communities of artists, and to kick-start new ones. Fun-a-Day is an open invitation to foster a daily creative practice. It began as a way for the originators of the project to keep each other motivated and maintain their creative practices through the month of January. The project spread as others embraced the idea and vowed to not only complete their project, but to encourage their friends to do the same. Since its inception in 2004, the project has shown tens of thousands of pieces by hundreds of artists.
The Fun-A-Day show will be held at The Mr. Roboto Project, 5106 Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh PA 15224. The Fun-A-Day show will be on display for one night only, from 7pm-10pm on Friday, March 1, 2013, during the Unblurred Gallery Crawl. The show is free, all-ages, and unjuried. Come out and see what your friends (and future friends) have been up to during the first month of 2013!
