Tree Pittsburgh Presents Arbor Aid 2011

Arbor Aid is an annual fundraiser for Tree Pittsburgh, an environmental non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the City’s vitality by restoring and protecting City trees. This fundraiser has grown over the years into one of Fall’s more fun and unqiue events. Art made from salvaged wood is exhibited, food and drink is plentiful, and entertainment this year is provided by Pairdown, and the Armadillos. And the folks at Tree Pittsburgh know that to make it a true Pittsburgh celebration you need to include an epic Cookie Table … and a Hug a Tree Photo Booth. So strap on your dancing shoes and head over to Guardian Storage Solutions this Friday, October 28th at 9pm.

Do you know about $5.00 Bargain Monday at the South Side Works Cinema? You should!

All day, every Monday, movie tickets to just about any film is $5. This includes new releases, so make sure you buy your tickets early to ensure your showing doesn’t sell out. Some restrictions apply, for instance, Sony Pictures films are not eligible for Bargain Monday pricing for the first 14 days of the release.

If you’re hungry after the show and you’d like to stick with the theme of Bargain Monday, stroll on down to Fatheads (1805 E. Carson St.) for wing night. Wings are 20 cents and you can get as many as you want, and feel free to mix and match flavors. Wing night specials are also available on Wednesday. Seasonal beers including Troeg’s Mad Elf and Great Lakes Christmas Ale are on tap at Fatheads right now.

If you’re on the other side of the river, the AMC Loews Waterfront Theatre offers $5.00 showings all day, Monday through Thursday.

Make sure you print out your Popalot Card from Pittsburgh Popcorn Company for a free small bag of heavenly goodness after purchasing 9 bags of any size. Each week, both Pittsburgh Popcorn Company locations feature different flavors. One is usually seasonal and the other is a bit more non-traditional. Through December 3, 2009, the Strip District (209 21st St) store is featuring Gingerbread Cookie Corn and Spicy Southwest Cheddar. Through December 1, 2009, at the downtown (822 Liberty Ave) store, you can pick up Pumpkin Spice or Dill Pickle. If you feel like sharing the popcorn love, they ship nationwide!

Right By Nature brings Organic to the Burgh

To Pittsburgh’s surprise and pure enjoyment, an organic market just opened on Smallman Street a few weeks ago. The shop, which is 2 city blocks, has everything from fresh baked good (the most delicious chocolate chip pecan cookies), produce ranging from vegetables to exotic fruits, flower arrangements, cleaning products and prepared foods. Right By Nature even validates parking when you park in the Cork Factory garage. How great is that? I’ve been to the market three times now and each time I go back I have even more of a reason to love everthing about it. Just yesterday there was a bit of confusion during lunchtime a co-worker and I ordered sandwiches. They felt so bad about how long we waited so they gave us our lunch on the house. I almost dropped dead. The wonderful woman who was chatting with us said, “We want you to come back!” I wanted to hug her. The staff is friendly and down to earth, you won’t see any SUV driving, soccer mom, organic bandwagon peeps at Right By Nature, only genuine people really trying to make a difference in their lives, with their health and for their community. 5 stars, 2 thumbs up etc… etc… etc…

Wheeling Through History

The Young Preservationists are a great group – looks like an awesome way to spend a Saturday morning in Pittsburgh. I like that they have 3 different tours – a great opportunity to check out a neighborhood that may be new to you.

Young Preservationists Association (YPA) Wheeling Through History bike tours, which take place this Saturday, Sept. 20, from 9:00 a.m. to Noon.

There are three tours from which to choose (tour descriptions are at the bottom):

North Side
South Side (with Rivers of Steel)
Strip District-Lawrenceville

Developed by YPA members Lee Ann Antol and David Wohlwill in 2005, YPA’s “Wheeling Through History” Bike Tours feature Pittsburgh neighborhoods, history, and the progressive sport of cycling. YPA will stage these tours on Saturday, September, 20, 2008, in partnership with Venture Outdoors and Rivers of Steel. Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is the sponsor.

All tours will begin at 9:00 a.m. and end at the Heinz History Center at Noon. Wheeling Through History is a healthy and fun way to learn about our heritage while appealing to a youthful audience. Free Eat ‘n Park Smiley Cookie to all participants!

YPA’s Wheeling Through History bike tours are part of the Pittsburgh Regional Youth Heritage Festival, which takes place on October 11th at the Heinz History Center.

You can register for Wheeling Through History on YPA’s website, www.youngpreservationists.org. The cost is $25 (includes bike & helmet) or $20 if you bring your own bike (you must bring your own helmet, too). Registration closes at 5:00 p.m. this Thursday, so hurry up and secure your spot on Wheeling Through History!

Tour Descriptions

Wheeling Through History North Side
- Join the Young Preservationists Association of Pittsburgh and Venture Outdoors as we trace the original Wheeling Through History route through old Allegheny, now Pittsburgh’s North Side. Visitors will be treated to historic sites in Allegheny Center, Manchester, Allegheny West, and the Mexican War Streets. The tour concludes with a ride along the North Shore Trail. It’s a scenic and healthy way to view Pittsburgh’s historic North Side.
Wheeling Through History South Side
- Join Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area for a bike tour of Pittsburgh’s rich industrial history through the South Side and Four Mile Run. Meet at the History Center, then it’s off to Station Square to follow the South Side Trail through the oldest mixed use industrial neighborhood in Pittsburgh – South Side. The tour crosses the Monongahela River at the Hot Metal Bridge, then turns towards the Panther Hollow Trail into the heart of Four Mile Run, an isolated area named for the stream about four miles above The Point that flowed into the Monongahela River. The tour returns to Station Square via the Eliza Furnace Trail past the high-tech corridor that is representative of the brownfield development taking place along the length of the Monongahela River.
Wheeling Through History Strip District-Lawrenceville
- See what the excitement is all about in the historic Strip District and Lawrenceville. Neighbors in the Strip and YPA will feature these neighborhoods, which are sandwiched between the 16th Street Bridge and the 62nd Street Bridge. It includes more than 100 shops, galleries, studios, and professional services firms. Lawrenceville’s Butler Street commercial district is an official Main Street program that features many newly restored storefronts and bustling new shops. The Strip District is best known for its retail produce and ethnic food stores, restaurants and coffee shops.

The 3 F's – Fun, Festival, Free

This Saturday, May 17th is the Annual Venture Outdoors Festival. For one day – open up all of their activities for a free festival. If you have been wanting to try hiking/biking/climbing/kayaking – this is your chance to try it out for free! This local blogger/college student is looking forward to finishing their exams and attending the festival before they graduate on Sunday.

I know this is last minute notice but I wanted to share this invitation with Pittsburgh. On Monday night there is a little event to benefit the Union Project (which is one of my favorite places/organizations in Pittsburgh) at the Enrico Biscotti Company in the strip district – which is probably my most favorite place to dine in Pittsburgh. Enrico’s Cafe is a tiny little hidden cafe behind the biscotti shop on Penn Ave that has an amazing atmosphere, delicious food, open kitchen.

The cafe is usually only open for lunch, but on Monday they will be open for this special event. The event is only $15 and everything goes to support the Union Project. I will be there – I hope you will consider stopping by for a great event.

Another fun fact about the Enrico Biscotti Company is that it was the setting for the film The Bread My Sweet – which starred Scott Baio and was filmed at the biscotti co in 2001. The film was released on video under the title A Wedding for Bella. You can read my blog post about the film here.

Fancy Pants Fundraiser

So I know some people have been looking for an excuse to go to a dress up party. Here is a perfect excuse – the folks at Gilda’s club have put together a fun evening of drinking and dancing at dejaVu. Gilda’s Club is a great organization that is here to support anyone who is impacted by cancer. The Western PA’s Gilda’s Club is relatively new to Pittsburgh and has a great new facility in the Strip District. I know Carly is working to make this a fantastic event.

PGHflicks – The Bread My Sweet

One of the great things about holidays is that we usually get to catch up on some movies. I have been wanting to compile some reviews of Pittsburgh books and movies but there are some I haven’t seen in quite some time. I let my sister select the movie this evening and she suggested The Bread My Sweet. This is a delightful little movie that was filmed here in Pittsburgh in 2001. Scott Baio plays an executive/baker at the Enrico Biscotti company in the Strip district.
The film is filled with great views of Pittsburgh and the bakery. It is a little cheesy but a nice story and you just can’t not like Scott Baio’s character.

The movie was renamed “A Wedding for Bella” when it was released on video/DVD. The film is available on Netflix - add it to your list and let us know what you think.

What other movies filmed in Pittsburgh are your favorites – I am working on putting together a list. Please share.

Benefit Concert for Muscians in New Orleans

Randy Baumann from WDVE sent event to me and I am thrilled to share the information. Thursday night is a benefit concert for Tipitina’s foundation in New Orleans. Tipitina’s foundation has a great mission and I sure this is going to be a great event. I hope you will attend.
