Say hello to Iva! She comes to IheartPGH with photo skills and a super camera! We’re excited for more of her posts that will have way better photos than the ones from my sad little Blackberry camera. Check out her awesome photos from the East End Brewing Keg ride last weekend

Cyclists love getting together and riding in absurdly large groups. I believe we’re entertained by the idea of being a spectacle — children shout “Wow! Bicycles!”, people stand on stoops taking video with flip cameras, traffic patterns react to the bikes and not the other way around. And, in my experience, cyclists LOVE beer. Why else would Pittsburgh have a bicycle bar on the South Side and maybe the most popular cycling jersey in town is the Big Hop jersey.

East End Brewing has it’s finger on that pulse. The 8th annual Pedal Pale keg ride sold out 600 registrations — after adding an extra hundred registration slots four days before ride. Proceeds from registration fees went to ABOARD’s autism connection and BikePGH. Someone even donated $250 to pull a keg!

Part of the magic of the Pedal keg ride is that the destination is kept a secret, right up until the kegs pull over. Beginning at the brewery’s new location on Frankstown Avenue The procession mostly meandered through the beautiful neighborhood of Highland Park, making a full loop around the reservoir. Then, 600 cyclists descended upon Station Street Hot Dogs, tapped some tasty kegs and destroyed hot dogs like it was our job.

Joey Franz is a 10-year-old boy who attends a Shaler Area elementary school as a fifth grader. Joey loves dancing, acting, and performing and he is quite the talented child. Not only does he love the spotlight, he is positive, funny, and very smart.

Unfortunately, Joey was born with some very serious health problems, including cardiac and liver disease. He has been through many hospitalizations, surgeries, and procedures in his young life. Doctors have told Joey that he is a “ONE OF A KIND” child and his family and friends couldn’t agree more. This month, Joey will be having intense liver surgery and needs your help.

On Thursday January 19, friends and family will be hosting a spaghetti benefit dinner for the Franz family. The event will be held at Burchfield Primary School in Shaler Township from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Cost for tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for kids—your ticket includes salad, spaghetti dinner, a soft drink, and dessert.

Please help Joey’s friends and family make the evening successful by volunteering your time! Thank you!

Where: Burchfield Primary School

When: Thursday, January 19 (tomorrow night)

Address: 1500 Burchfield Road, Allison Park, PA

Time: 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Cost: $8 for adults & $4 for students (under three is free)

Maybe we should be calling it a perfect artistic storm for Lawrenceville artists Gab Cody and Sam Turich. The duo have been receiving major accolades lately for their work on Fat Beckett, which just had its world premiere at Quantum Theatre. Add to that their Lawrenceville hit Mombies is screening at the Sprout Fund’s Tenacity tomorrow night. And the Kickstarter launch of their new project – Progression – a narrative film based on the Lawrenceville progressive dinner.

Fat Beckett: (Pittsburgh now– Luxembourg soon.) By Gab Cody in collaboration with Rita Reis. Directed by Sam Turich. The show runs through December 18. It’s a beautiful hilarious piece. Reviews: Pittsburgh Tatler, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Pittsburgh Post Gazette The show is sold out for several nights, but tonight is open and there are still tickets available for closing weekend! Buy tickets here. Student and artist rate available at the door: Buy Fat Beckett Tickets

Progression: Progression is a feature-length narrative film project, set in Lawrenceville, shot in Lawrenceville and about a real-life Lawrenceville institution: the 27-year-old progressive dinner, which began with about 15 friends and has become a community event with more than 150 participants. Written and to-be-directed by Gab Cody and Sam Turich. We need your help! Any amount helps! Visit here to watch a teaser trailer and contribute: Visit Progression on Kickstarter

Tenacity: The Sprout Fund’s 10-year anniversary gala promises to be an incredible event! $25 Balcony Seating now available. Limited seats remain on the main floor. Doors open 7pm; curtain at 8pm. For complete information on performances and event supporters, visit tenacity.sproutfund.org. And– they’re showing Mombies, which is a treat to watch with a big crowd!

Washington.

CHS has been working in Oakland and neighborhoods around Pittsburgh since the early 1970s. CHS offers a variety of programs to serve people in the Pittsburgh area. CHS has a range of programs to help those dealing with homelessness and mental health.

You can help CHS with their holiday programming by donating a gift card or two. Stop by the event on Monday December 5 or you can send gift cards to their offices in Oakland

A few years ago, End End Brewing decided that the best way to get the first keg of Pedal Pale Ale to the bar was by bike. And thus the keg ride was born. And each year a few more people decided to come along for the ride. This spring over 400 people joined the ride to deliver the first keg AND raise money for some local charities.

Since the keg rides have been so popular, in 2009 it was decided that the way to end the pedaling season was with a reverse keg ride back to the brewery – another chance to raise some money, drink some beer and take a bike ride through Pittsburgh with a few hundred people.

Keg Ride, but its Halloween Weekend?

Yes, it is! So the bicycle beer loving folks are holding a costumer contest – and it is a good one. Prizes will be awarded for Best Beer-themed Costume, Best Pittsburgh-themed Costume and Best Overall Costume,

How does this work?

Well, talk about another great example of a Pittsburgh collaboration. East End Brewing is working with the folks at Venture Outdoors to make sure this is a well organized and safe event. East End Brewing knows beer. And Venture Outdoors are experts in organizing large groups of people to do fun things outside.

Well I was just about to write about the Fineview and South Side Slopes Step Treks. But Diana Nelson Jones and I must be thinking the same thing. She just posted about both of these events on her blog for the Post-Gazeete – Walkabout. So click here to read her post about both of these great events.

This is one of my favorite photos of Pittsburgh that I took on the Step Trek in 2006. That was the graffiti on the wall at the time. I wonder if it is still there…

One of my all time favorite movies is Clue – yes the Clue with Mrs. White, Professor Plum and the singing telegram – so I love that the upcoming fundraiser at the Carnegie Library includes a live action version of Clue. This Friday, September 23, its After Hours @ the Library. The Carnegie Library has been hosting these occasional fundraisers at different Libraries around town – this week the After Hours party is at the library in Oakland. For $25 you can support the library, have some snacks, enjoy some drinks, listen to the musical stylings of Joy Ike AND play live action game of Clue.

What’s Live Action Clue you ask? It is our optional, super low key and awfully fun way to win some cool prizes and help Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh solve a murder mystery. You’ll stroll through the party enjoying your drinks and some great snacks donated by local restaurants and may see Mrs. Peacock, Mr. Green or Colonel Mustard having a fabulous time at the library too. You also may see the rope bartending and the wrench reading a magazine… Your job is to ask these characters if they have a clue for you. Once you get all the clues (or lack of clues, hint, hint), you’ll be able to figure out who done it, with what and in what room. It is easy, fun and optional.

One of those volunteers is Dave Lagnese – not only is he a super supporter of the Big Pour but he also volunteers his time to make the Farmers Market Cooperative of East Liberty a success. He is responsible for bringing the Kew Park Coffee Bar to the Farmers Market and does a ton of work to promote the Farmers Market as well.

If you are looking to get your hands on some tickets for the 2011 Big Pour – Stop by the Kew Park Coffee Bar at the East Liberty Farmers Market (it is the building across the street from the Home Depot) on Saturday, September 3 between 7 and Noon. There will be a raffle and an auction for a pair of Big Pour tickets.
