Blue Slide Park = BEST PLAYGROUND EVER

You may have noticed some buzz on the internet about Mac Miller and his new song and album Blue Slide Park. Mac Miller is a hip hop artist who is from Pittsburgh and has recorded a few songs about the area.

Especially because it is the featured album in this weeks iTunes email:

Thanks to Mac Miller for putting Pittsburgh and this park on the map. While we were excited to see Blue Slide Park gain such national attention – a quick search of google revealed that there isn’t much online about the actual Blue Slide Park. For those of you who are new to the area or haven’t heard of the place – Blue Slide Park is a real park and any kid that grew up in the Sq. Hill area will tell you this is THE BEST playground around.

While Pittsburgh has lots of great parks and playgrounds – I think most people who have been there will agree that Blue Slide Park is the best. Yes, there is a giant, blue concrete slide that is built into the hillside. Ok, to an adult, giant might be an exaggeration but it looks giant to kids and yes the slide is blue.

Where is Blue Slide Park? Blue Slide Park is park of Frick Park, located on Beechwood Blvd right by the entrance to the Off-Leash Exercise Area

Tree Pittsburgh Presents Arbor Aid 2011

Arbor Aid is an annual fundraiser for Tree Pittsburgh, an environmental non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the City’s vitality by restoring and protecting City trees. This fundraiser has grown over the years into one of Fall’s more fun and unqiue events. Art made from salvaged wood is exhibited, food and drink is plentiful, and entertainment this year is provided by Pairdown, and the Armadillos. And the folks at Tree Pittsburgh know that to make it a true Pittsburgh celebration you need to include an epic Cookie Table … and a Hug a Tree Photo Booth. Just when we thought it was going to be kind of a quiet weekend in town – there are a ton of great concerts from national and local artists. And something at every price point – from FREE to not so free.

Friday is the Hometown Music Fest at Southpark - with a stellar line up of local performers. We are happy to learn about Jimbo and the Soupbones who will be performing at Ribs on the River on Saturday. Thanks to the reader that posted about these guys.

Jam on Walnut Line Up for 2011

Summer time, means outside concert time. One of the most popular events of the season (and one of teh most popular summer posts on IheartPGH last summer) is Jam on Walnut. Back for another year of free concerts in the street – there is a great line up of bands.

June 25 – Donora and Bill Deasy
July 23 – Meeting of Important People and Radio Tokyo
August 20 – Kelsey Friday and Dancing Queen

The concerts are on Walnut Street in Shadyside from 7pm-11pm. The concerts are free but drink sales benefit the Western PA Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Blues for Food 2011

I would make some joke about this being a great cure for the winter blues – but since it is spring like weater outside – I will spare you the bad jokes and get to the point.

6.5 hours of live blues music and it is all for a good cause.

The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank knows that 12 months is along time to wait for the next annual blues fest which is held during the summer. So they bring you a little mid winter break of blues.

$10 gets you in the door – all of the money goes to the food bank and you can spend sunday afternoon listening to Eugene and the Nightcrawlers…

Shark Tank CD Release

Recently I was chatting with a friend about Kellie Maize and her newest video which is all about Pittsburgh. Friend of IheartPGH – eager to share more new music – gave me a preview of this homegrown video as well. Shark Tank has been described by others as a super group of music talent. First up is Pittsburgh’s own Lord Grunge from Grand Buffet. Grand Buffet has been making music and performing since 1996 – they have toured the US and Europe extensively. You can read more about Grand Buffet here. Shark Tank also includes two artists from Baltimore – Height and Mickey Free and a Canadian rapper Brendan Richmond. Read more about the pedigree of Shark Tank in the Baltimore City Paper here.

The video is for their song Don’t Shoot and I can confirm it was shot right here in Pittsburgh.
