The Museum of the Mixtape

April 10, 2008 Lindsay

Not only is this a great idea for an art exhibit, but I get to blog about a museum that I have not even been to yet and I get to talk about my favorite audio tape.

The Tom Museum is puppet maker Tom Sarver’s museum on the North Side. On Friday April 11, 2008 the Tom Museum opens a new exhibition MIXTAPE which is all about – the mix tape. Which is just a totally great idea. Mix tapes are such an interesting look at musical tastes and points in time. In the movie High Fidelity – John Cusack’s character spends quite a bit of time talking about how to put together the perfect mix tape.

I love the idea of a museum exhibit of these little tiny tapes of personal art. I found this event on Pop City Media’s weekly events round up – Pop Filter and they provide a link to this website – www.artofthemix.org – which is dedicated to mix tapes.

My Salute to the Audio Tape- I heart Tapes
I recently got a new used car and this is the first time I am with out a tape player. I know we are in the age of ipods and CDS (yes the car has a cd player) but I have a pile of these amazing mix tapes and tapes that I have collected over the years that I love. One of my favorites is the soundtrack to the movie The Big Easy. My dad bought this tape when we were in grade school. I have grown to love it because it is filled with zydeco and other interesting music. I just realized that I have never seen the movie but I did find out that you can buy a used VHS copy from Amazon for a penny. I may just need to find my walkman to listen to these old gems.
